The drake sword isn't even that good. Using the gargoyle halberd or black Knight weapons if you got one to drop is way more reliable and you can actually use it through the entire game

Using a guide will ruin a lot of the surprises. I would only use one to make sure you're not missing quest triggers, not for the levels themselves.

Get a weapon that you like, upgrade it to the max you can, level up the minium stats to wield it properly and then pump up stamina/hp. Keep at least under 70% equip load.

That's what I've been doing, I'll be unsure of what to do next and then check the guide but I'm not going room by room checking the guide or using them for bosses. The only reason I know about the Drake sword is not because of a guide but a friend told me when I told him I had trouble with the game. He also told me you can't rely on it the entire game and it might fuck you over in the long wrong since you might not actually 'git gud'

I work 7 days a week and box, so it's tough to dedicate the time needed for a purely virgin play through. It's one of the most enjoyable satisfying games I've played in a very long time though.

Still don't think you should read a guide all throughout. The hardest part of Dark Souls is getting started, you already did so you're good. Play it blind from now on. Even if it's like one hour a day or something, everytime you play you'll make some progress, and the longer the game lasts you the better - after you end it you'll never experience something like it again.

The game is about learning from your fuck-ups and deaths (and it will happen, its part of the game, call it "artificial difficulty" if you like); using a guide ruins half the fun.
