There's not a lot of subtlety to Western writing either, and there's a lot to be said for a finely crafted linear experience. People act like a game being linear is a sin or something, but creating an appropriately tuned level is a lot harder than creating an open world with copy/paste garbage throughout or a bunch of random levels that are designed to be tackled in any order.

Even then, they only became a thing because the controllers introduced in the 5th Gen were WAY more advanced than anything you'd find on older consoles, so it made perfect sense for tutorials to start becoming a thing as games started moving on to 3D, where you had to account for 7+ buttons that may or may not have their own unique functions depending on the game.

The point that I'm trying to make is that there are reasons on both sides that necessitated the advent of tutorials, even if the cultures are distinct in some way.

Easterners added tutorials because their culture encourages people to all be the same, while westerners added tutorials because general audiences are too lazy/stupid to put in the work to figuring out how things work while blaming the game for their inability to detect subtlety in the game's design.

A recent game I played called Malicious Fallen is so simple but at the same time you really have to go through at least first 3 tutorials otherwise you would never find out how to use release the magic

Lost Odyssey is a pretty bad case, but Tales of games also have tutorials that are at least 30-40-mins long, and are just awkwardly put in the game. Catherine had a somewhat long tutorial, but that was 100% necessary from a dev standpoint.

Persona and some SMT games are another example, but we only got ports and IV back then.

Whenever I think of western game I think of Witcher 3, AC, GTA,TES, Fallout, etc. But even then some of these franchises are getting stale despite sitting at the top, which means smaller studios seeking success just copy their formulas. I think the west is just too damn obsessed about shooters while Japan at least offer interesting gameplay and are not afraid to get out of their comfort zone (Ico studio for example).

I remember the insane hype for Bioshock Infinite and how it was supposed to save western video games writing but it turned out to be a shit cover shooter with a messed up story.

That's not an actual victory condition though because whether or not you actually beat your high score is divorced from your ability to "win" the game.

Take a game like Time Crisis for example, you can actually beat that game because it uses a level based progression and has bosses throughout each section of the game. You could technically get a high score without actually beating the game but you still didn't achieve the victory condition of beating the final boss.

Also, what about games like Pong, which has no high scores to keep track of and can go on for however long you want until you get bored and shut the game off? Is Pong not a game now either?

MMOs are world simulators, but they contain games within themselves.

Compare this to, for example, second life.
Second life is NOT a game. It's just a world simulator, but it IS an MMO.

Also, many MMOs have overarching story quests that can be completed. Just because you can play past the victory condition in a sandbox mode doesn't strip it of the game.

Ultima Online is probably the closest you get to a non-game MMO outside of Second Life, but only after the Trammel/Felucia split.

Yeah, I agree. I couldn't get into any recent japanese games because their tutorials are so forced and long that I drop the game before the tutorial ends. Why is it so hard to make simple, unintrusive, intuitive tool-tips that appear briefly as you play the game? There can always be a "help" button that you can access any time in the menu, which provides you with overviews of gameplay and stuff like that.
I don't want to be forced to watch over an hour of unskippable, un-immersive dialogue about the gameplay stuff that I already know about from dozens of other games.
