>Dozens and dozens and dozens of Isekai anime and manga
>Many of them depict amazing MMOs with all kinds of complicated and fleshed out skill systems, overworlds and exciting raids and exploration
>None of the current MMOs on the market even come close

What the fuck. WoW has been done to death and FFXIV is such a streamlined casual grind fest that you could spend 300+ hours without ever hearing a peep out of the insectoid players on the server with you. Community is like 99% of what makes the game good, and FFXI has long since lost that, and the experience of the OG Everquest will never come back because those kinds of mechanics are too hard for inbred squeakers to enjoy today. Why can't we have a really good MMO again? It looks like there's absolutely nothing ever coming out except WoW exp #99 and korean money laundering sims out the ass.
>>
You actually need Players for an MMO and nobody wants to play Games like FFXI or DAC anymore.

Making a game like that would be financial suicide.
>>
>>382614708
And now we're stuck in a death spiral of attempting WoW clones because no one has any idea or the money to try something new.

What the hell else could have an edge?
>>
>>382614708
How exactly do we know this if nobody is going to try?
Sure, you could imply that because people are playing current MMOs they wouldn't leap onto anything old-styled, but that could be the complete opposite and the only reasoning why they're not jumping onto shit that is anything like FFXI is because they never got to try it in the first place?
>>
>>382614512
because 90% of them are fucking stupidly bad MMOs and only are interesting because of the characters in them
Overlord was literally p2w gatcha shit
the guy who made SOA literally never played an mmo
DATABASE was ok I guess but that one was never really about the game itself
>>
>>382614512
Because isekais don't even come close to being like what an MMO would actually play like, and idiots like you love them for it.
>>
>>382615056
We know this from huge successes like Dark Fail Online and Arch Age.

The problem isn't Developers being unimaginative or wanting to grab some cash, the Problem is that the average modern gaymurr xD gets frustrated if he has to figure anything out by himself or actually engage in social interaction with other players.
>>
>>382615056
Obviously focus groups and feedback should prove there's a decent market for players that want a more difficult MMO enviroment, the whole "dark souls so hard" meme was integral to catapulting the series to further popularity rather than just dumbing things down for the average child. Why not make a more classic experience MMO where you have to actually talk to other players to arrange parties and conduct raids, where the economy is more rewarding for crafting and player based input, where zones are inhospitable and you can experience wipes like in XI, or with some sort of actual PvP risk rather than locking it away to some duel arena?

The whole marketing strategy of MMORPGs is to milk as much money out of customers for the least amount of content. This typically ends up with grindy MMOs that routinely release content that will be dead in a month. On top of this, MMO developers have it in their heads that "the end game experience" is what it's all about (and not the journey of leveling and making friends). As a consequence, they're now just a streamlined race to the finishline for content people will play for a month then abandon. This race results in min-maxing players who play massively multiplayer online games by themselves, or outright quit before they get to "the fun stuff." To compound these issues, ever since the advent of "publicize all personal information via facebook/twitter/instagram or you're a creep" mindset, people already had their "real" friends on facebook so why bother making friends in [videogame online]? Being connected to thousands of other people online is much less amazing than it was two decades ago, and as a result there aren't as many people playing quality online games on their computers but shitty ones on smartphones/tablets.

Well it seems like Yggdrasil had indded a lot of cash items but gotta admit that having so much freedom on races, jobs and skills its pretty cool

What's the verdict on the Dragon Quest game? I know the nips love the series over there
>>
>>382614512
That would be because the people writing those series only have to implement those systems as far as the story requires, they don't have to balance and design them around the complete freedom that an MMO is supposed to provide.
>>
>>382615198
Actually, the author of SAO designed the SAO game after his favourite MMO, Ragnarok Online.
>>
>>382614512

Fuck you nigga I like casual MMOs. If the group of people with your preferences is too small to provide the financial incentive for studios to create the games you want, get fucked. Play some grandstrat instead.
>>
I enjoyed Log Horizon, and that seems a bit like a casual MMO type of deal, just with Ragnarok Online camera angles.

How possible would it be to make a half scale earth as the game's world?
>>
>>382617416
Without procedural generation it would be basically impossible to make a map half the size of earth. With procedural generation it would be boring.

Not that any of that matters, a map that large would be impractical anyway since getting around such an enormous map would be a chore. Content density is far more important than content size. Even if you wanted to create a game world that would take a long time to explore you'd probably be fine making it roughly the size of a single state in the US. Hell even then you better make sure it's really content dense so people aren't traveling between bits of content for hours on end.

Ideally you would want your game world to be about the size of a large city at the most. Maybe you could make it a few times bigger if you implemented some fast travel options that were legitimately fast. Making a map that's half the size of the earth just screams "gimmick that will interest people during development but will bore everyone into quitting as soon as they start playing because it takes hours to get anywhere and 95 percent of the game map is boring filler content".

World's a fucking big place man.

>Hell even then you better make sure it's really content dense so people aren't traveling between bits of content for hours on end.
This is the shitty thing about every open world meme game out there or everything that tries to have a big map.
You spend more time tilting the stick/pressing W toward your destination than doing anything meaningful.
And of course, devs will never shit out enough content to fill it all of those gaps. The entire design is dead in the water.

Indeed. When I watch a mmo isekai it just reminds me of Tibia.
