Why is /v/ so bad at fighting games?

Because I lack the willpower to practice and get good with inputs.
Plus I play with keyboard, and misplace my hands often, so potential for fuckup is high.
If I was good at fightan though I'd play the everloving shit out of KI.
Yes I fell for the free Windows 10 upgrade meme.

/v/ is a very large group of people. You don't get the sense of it, because everyone's anonymous, but 4chan gets hundreds of thousands of impressions, and /v/ is one of the biggest boards. Given that many people, it's natural that most of them are going to be shit at any type of game. Games that are competitive and require muscle memorization, reactions, and critical thinking are going to be especially difficult for most people here.

That said, there are some people on /v/ who actually know their shit when it comes to fighting games. But the majority of people here are the ones who were making, "SETH AI IS TOO HARD" threads back in 2009.

Easy stuff: main story, character stories, watch all the tutorials both vol 1 and 2, beat survival on easy with everyone, do whatever the daily/weekly missions are right now.

Harder stuff: Do the trails, beat the main story on hard mode, do survival normal, hard and extreme with everyone.

After all that all you can do is keep up with the weekly/daily missions, grind FM by winning fights and by fighting with the same character until they level up.

I'm actually finally getting the hang of SFV. It took a couple of character switches but I finally found my place with Akuma. I still can't climb out of silver but I'm having fun again unlike with braindead Necalli. I might finally git gud after a while, hoping to pick up Tekken 7 once it's on offer to git good too

Anyone who's been exposed to more technical, more dynamic fighting games will quickly pass on tekken. Other top fighters, namely Street Fighter, KoF and MK/Injustice have advanced impressively in their latest installments; but the relic that is tekken just can't seem to evolve, furthermore many combos can be done simply by hitting 1-button, and the nearly "instant-kill" rage art moves are just laughably broken. Instead of a supplying a proper fighting engine, matches in T7 seem to rely heavily on "who can get their rage move off first". So many elements of the gameplay don't even require any sort of skill. In my book, slow motion over and over again also gets old very quickly. And in the end, it's more of a novelty or gimmick rather than an actual, thought-out fighting game mechanic. But hey, the casual crowd will be pleased!

If you want something a little more "button-masher-friendly," tekken might be your cup of tea.... Key word, might.

Probably because their lack of popularity combined with hard to reach skill floors and ceilings make fighting games seem unaproachable and make the time investment into getting good at them look like a waste of time when you could be playing popular games that require a lot less mechanical skill (like mobas).

>>382612956
Well there's a reason for that. FANG is shit and Necalli, while broken, is so freaking boring. He's literally auto-pilot: the character, matchups don't matter and he has like 3 combos, one of which is a target combo, and one of which you'll be doing 90% of the time. Literally the one interesting thing he has is a command grab
>>
>>382614090
Platinum means jack shit nowadays. Even Diamond players are scrubby (I'm a shitty diamond Balrog player, trust me, I'm awful at this game).

My problem with 90% of the vanilla cast, honestly. The DLC character are better thought out in my opinion.

I'm not new to Fighters by any means, but I never gave anime Fighters a REAL try. I bought BlazBlue back when CT released and got bored of it cause no one else I knew was playing it. Friend picked up Xrd and got me a copy so I've really been giving it a try. I got a lot of Jack-O down, but it's hard to get it efficiently going in matches, especially in games where the other player is obviously much more familiar than I. And then there's Ramenthal, who I REALLY want to learn but can't for the life of me get the flow right in match. Eh..soon enough, in time.

The ultraplat to diamond grind is insane. Winning three matches and then losing all you've earned in one match is almost heartbreaking. It was worth it for me because I feel like I have nothing more to prove to myself now that I've reached diamond, in a way, but it's not really worth it otherwise.

>>382615873
>And then there's Ramenthal, who I REALLY want to learn but can't for the life of me get the flow right in match.
Same, but with Answer. Feels like the struggle to get some setups going is not even worth it considering his kinda mediocre damage, but he's a lot of fun.

The problem is a fighting game has things vital to learn that aren't based in mechanics of the game itself. All fighting has an internal logic to it, and that includes video game fights. If you don't know it, you can learn it, but there's not really an instruction manual as such.

Ramlethal in a nutshell is a scramble and ramble in neutral, and hopefully you get them into the corner. Her setplay is about as strong as it gets in Xrd and the only way she can really win, so grind them out and in matches focus on situations where you can confirm into a corner carry and lock 'em up. You want to prioritize getting a hard knockdown or moving towards the corner more than damage 90% of the time.

Yeah once a Ram gets their opponent in the corner and sets up the meaty sword summons, they pretty much have to just hold whatever mix-up is coming or be forced to spend burst/tension to get out. Once you get the really grimy setups down and you've got them in the corner it's really all on you if they get out. Check out keeponrock.in & mdesilva on youtube for match vids if you haven't already, it might help you piece together her neutral options better.

But yeah I've put it on the back burner for now until it gets put on steam. Between the issues I keep having with matchmaking and not being able to play any other characters I don't wanna buy it then see it come out on steam and have to buy it again.

Learn her gatling that goes into 3H for a knockdown, from there you can go for an OTG string to push them away from you so that you can summon a house, or if you already have a house/minions out you can pressure them on wake-up. 2S and 6H are your best anti-airs, 6H keeps them grounded so if you have minions out and they're at mid-range or further you can lock them down and let the goons go to work. You pretty much just want to roleplay Johnny Appleseed in neutral and look for as many chances to summon houses and get as many goons out as fast as possible. When the whole squad's out it's similar to Ram where you just overwhelm them with shit on the screen pressuring autonomously while you do whatever the fuck you want.

You wanna keep your opponent on their toes so that they're forced to decide whether they should rush you down or deal with your houses. Your goal is to be as annoying as possible. Honestly fuck this character I used to like Helloween, too.

both are pretty bad, but if I had the pick one, I'd choose the party game. One gives consistent enjoyment, the other requires you to work for a payoff which may or may not even be given to you in the end. and considering its a fucking vidya, i dont feel the need to push that level of discipline on myself for what should be a relaxing hobby

at least with shooters you can be a shitter but at least move your fucking character, point and hit things. dont even get that luxury starting out in fighting

Why does it need to be a relaxing hobby? Sports were originally just playing, but after that it became something more since people enjoy competition. Same with games, at first it's just seen as an entertainment medium, but if people start wanting to see who's the best at something, then creating games for that audience makes sense. Besides, it's fun to be with a bunch of people who you know have put in the time to take the competition seriously.
Everyone who travels out of their state or country for a tournament has practiced basic stuff for hours on end, which makes it feel like an actual accomplishment to beat them, and if you lose then you know that it's on yourself to improve.

Well if you're completely new to GG, then suggesting a beginner character isn't bad advice. Especially if you're coming from Street Fighter and aren't used to Punch, Kick, L.Slash, H.Slash, Dust instead of LMH kick and LMH punch.
>>
>>382620635
i guess I can understand that, but it seems like an insight you can only gain in looking back. if I'm sitting around bored as hell, and i have to choose between playing a fighting game and sitting around practicing vague theory and memorizing punishes, or just loading up any single player game and killing my boredom in an instant, its very hard to convince me to go with the former on the promise that eventually all my work will be rewarded.
>>
>>382621102
Wasn't saying it was bad advice. I might be dismissing it, but I'm of the camp that if someone likes a character, to go with the character the mesh with. Same why I never just say go with Ryu or Ken. Sure they represent the games mechanics well, but I also find them boring.

Given how much GG does to teach you the game, what difference does it make to pick a character you like?

That just means fighting games aren't for you, nothing wrong with that. Practicing is something I often have to "force myself" to do, but I'm only able to do it because I know the payoff will be far sweeter than anything else. A 100 hour JRPG can be satisfying to play, but I'd still trade that in for 1 really meaningful win at a tournament.

It really just comes down to what you want from vidya at the end of the day. Some people find enjoyment out of very simple games with a low barrier of entry. Games where everything can be attained through several hours of play, they dont want to work for their accomplishments.

>>
>>382621498
Yes? There are always party games around, or games where you can do cool stuff by just mashing like in Tekken if you're playing at casual level. The biggest appeal of fighting games is the 1v1 aspect where one player comes out on top, this isn't hard to understand.

Retards. There are plenty of competitive games where you don't need to spend a year of your life practicing just to have fun and play on a level where you actually stand a chance.
>>
>>382621751
Are you referring to team-based games? Becaues those have the "advantage" of being able to deflect every mistake or loss on someone else, or be able to get carried by someone else.
>>
>>382621437
Plus when you're playing fighting games you're always actually playing, while in a 100 hour RPG, 80 of those hours is going to be farming, running from place to place, managing your inventory and other pointless bullshit. Yeah, I'd rather grind out in the training room than waste my time with that.
>>
>>382621880
I'm referring to one on one matches in all sorts of multiplayer games. Fighting games are the only ones with such a high barrier for no real reason.
>>
>>382622000
>one on one matches in all sorts of multiplayer games
like?
>>
>>382622000
If you think other genres don't have a high barrier to entry, you've never played any of them against someone who actually knows how to play.
>>
>>382621980
That's the thing, I give up on large scale games like fallout and skyrim all the time. Sure my load out gets better, but nothing feels rewarding and looking back, I feel like that's hours thrown away for no reason other than increasing arbitrary numbers. It's also assuming that "1000s of hours" in fighting games are spent in training. I've spent more hours in my lifetime of fighting games playing other people. Training makes up such a small number of that and it's usually only for warming up or learning a new character briefly.

Parrots will parrot though.
