Gothic is the ultimate pleb filter, it actually challenges the player.

ctrl lock on and the movement keys become the attack keys so you can only attack one guy and can't move at the same time, am I missing something?

I played with keyboard and mouse all the time and it was enjoyable.

And it takes a while to get good at combat. After you git gud it will be easy to hold and release LMB to attack, block, backstep, sidestep etc. It just takes practice

You can jump straight to second and you won't be confused, BUT If you play 1 first you will benefit greatly from it. Especially because at one point in Gothic 2 you return to the place where Gothic 1 took place and you see how everything has changed which is really nice.

Gothic 2 is much better than 1 tho and many people don't like 1 because there's lots of backtracking and fetch quests, but it's still a very good game.

Most open worlds are empty and lazy with the devs just using a brush to create the landscape

In Gothic 2 however EVERY single inch of the map was handcrafted and everything placed on purpose, there's hidden stuff behind every rock, behind a tree, behind a waterfall etc which makes exploring the world so enjoyable and you see how much work went into it.

There's plenty of shit to discover everywhere you go.

And there's lots of environmental storytelling as well, for example you see a blood trail leading into a cave, you follow it and find corpses. Or you see a cave with lots of skeletons in it so that tells you that there must be a powerful enemy inside etc

After playing Gothic 2 you will never find an open world as good

Decent. Swords, hammers, axes, maces, clubs, flails, staffs, pikes, halberds, bows, crossbows.

However the catch is that they are mostly governed by the same few skills (one-handed, two-handed, bow, crossbow), meaning that their fighting style doesn't actually differ much, and in order to do optimal damage you should usually go with the weapon that deals the most. Well a lot of these kinds of things come down to player discretion. My brother plays the modern XCOM games in a way that he refuses to save scum despite having the option, but he's occasionally broke that rule because he felt a character's death was absolutely bullshit. I've called him out on it multiple times and he tries to dodge the bullet.

Meanwhile I can't really imagine playing games like Max Payne without quicksaves, since every encounter has a chance to slaughter you in seconds if things go awry (which they usually do on a first time playthrough). Which forced me to get good for Max Payne 3 when it didn't hold back despite only having checkpoints regardless of platform.

Playing permadeath games without savescumming is a great experience, you should try it some time. Something like Valkyria Chronicles or Fire Emblem where the characters matter somewhat. I didn't get attached to my Xcom characters so that didn't matter. Any disappointment when a character died was purely from a gameplay perspective.
