Don't go in expecting Mario 64, although they're both platforms, they're way different games. Crash is a fairly simple game with some levels that can be a pain in the ass, especially if you're trying to collect everything. It shouldn't be that difficult of a game, but I haven't played it since the PS1 days

The controls are a little off, but the biggest flaw is the stages where you run towards the camera. Other then that it's a solid game.

Since I don't have a PS4 and no desire to purchase one, I went back to the old games. Since I don't suck, I breezed through the PS1 trilogy, 100%ing everything without too much effort. It's not that hard, just git gud, literally.

I'm now playing Wrath of Cortex, and now THAT'S hard, it's really kicking my ass, with all the long ass levels, not showering you with lives and masks, Coco sucking and of course the five minute loading screens. I would love to see how you "it's too hard" kiddies would fare on WoC.

Strawman, ho! Abilities are a quality of life aspect more than a core feature that makes platformers what they are. They are the icing on the cake and can offer other challenges but it shouldn't detract from a game if they don't have them. Crash makes fine work out of the lighting and level design by restricting itself to a glorified 2d plane.

This really only applies to Crash 1 (and even then that's not a bad thing. A lot of platformers have very bare abilities and play well). In Crash 2 he gains the slide, crawling, crouch, and belly flop which you need to need to learn to use to beat the game, and Crash 3 you learn a new ability after every boss you defeat, gaining five new ones you can use to help utilize to get 100% and progress in the game in general. So if you like more abilities to utilize, the series gave more as it went on.

It's there for people who like a challenge. It honestly reminds me of Classic styled Mega Man, where you have to make every jump count and be aware except for a 3D platformer. Very tight and precise gameplay.

well, especially since nostalgia sells these days. Back when Crash was at his peak and the PS2 dropped, people still wanted "NEWER BIGGER MORE!" in games. which, without the original dev team that came up with the games and how to best use the system's capabilities and work around them, ended up being aimless and shit, because they also had to appease expectations of a bigger more "advanced" game. this mentality really sort of died with the last gen I think, in part because of the rise of the indie game scene, which started putting out simple games that many times catered to nostalgia, and the general industry picked up on that and in general, the industry is currently very nostalgia friendly.

So these days, if new Crash games were developed, they could be just as simple as the originals, without getting criticized for being "stuck in the past", while still exploring expansion such as more levels and better graphics.

And Vicarious having clearly picked apart the originals to see how they tick, and delivered a straight almost 1:1 remake of all 3, gives me hope that if they are allowed to make an original Crash game, it could actually be really damn good if they stick to the principles that made the originals good.

Levels with movable camera can't be as tight as fixed camera. Just look at Twinsanity vs OT level design. The problem is that the varying angle of approach means it's too much to ask people to aim for a single box like in the original Crash.

They're supposed to be the same, but Crash 1 has some QOL improvements that make it easier, but also has some collission-detection issues that make it harder, and bouncing off enemies bounces you less distance which makes certain things harder too.
There's also the time trials added to 1 and 2 that are actually difficult to get good times on.

What's interesting is there are tells for these things although they are subtle.
The secret bonus area's tell is that the bear doesn't break all the planks on the bridge while the boulders did showing there could be something there.
The secret level entrance is the same. You should see that the ground you are launched from and the ground you land on are of similar heights while all other bear levels launch you off a cliff so there's no way to go back but here it looks like you might be able to jump across it.
In fact all of 2's secrets have some kind of subtle tell about their existence. Another example is Diggin' It where the pillar the plant is on looks completely different to all the other pillars you've seen in the level.

Don't even get me started. For whatever reason, gamers are more interested in a million blades of swaying grass than 60FPS, and I guess that extends to games like Crash and Ratchet.

The framerate is nice and steady though, which helps a lot. And unlike Ratchet, the motion blur doesn't make me nauseous.
