Good
-Combat system works well and is smartly designed.
-System in place where you can send people to get/do stuff while you're doing other things. Also where you can instantly return to the same place in a dungeon to swap characters out and return to the same place (for puzzles, gameplay, etc) is really nice and also saves a lot of time
-Charming cast of characters, world, setting and a lot of content and things to do for the kind of game it is.

Cons
-Characters can stand to be a bit more mobile (if you unequip weapons, you do go faster though)
-Slow start. Once you leave the slow start it picks up a lot though.
-Generally pretty easy with some exceptions

Conclusion.
If you like this kind of genre of game, you'll probably love it. It's overall solid but maybe not for everyone.

Does the combat improve any from the demo? Attacks felt oddly stiff, and the enemies were super simple to fight.

I wasn't a fan of the demo. As a dungeon-crawler with a town management element, I think the Dark Cloud series has superior combat and village customizability. The combat in this game tries to have more depth, but the heavy-attacks were to impractical and the fact the wind attack is only used for puzzle-solving feels like a wasted opportunity. The oasis's customization is limited to a 2D background instead of a 3D grid. It's sort of like the avenue in Pokemon BW2, more of a minigame than a central focus.

Well you also use the Green Gale in some battles. For example you use it to lower the defense of Sand Enemies as well as to knock flying enemies out of the sky.

heavy attacks definitely do have a purpose, they tend to topple enemies. they are best used right after you dodge an enemies attack.

Actually, the "heavy attack" is an alternative attack that's either a combo finisher with different results (faster than the vanilla heavy attack in most cases) a la monster Hunter or for highly damaging an enemy once it's down or distracted; and they also can topple enemies that are weak against that weapon. Also the wind gale decerases the defense of some enemies AND knocks down airborne foes.

You get attack chains as you level up so eventually you get chains that start with light attacks that have heavy attacks flow into them naturally and deal more damage. Plus as >>382571072 said, you use them to topple enemies.
