Try to add in stats when you feel comfortable. It'll help when you eventually make an rpg. Just don't have stat points you can increase with the press of a button. Gaining stats via tasks/quests would be more entertaining in an adventure game.

One of the biggest gameplay mechanics is people to help support your NEET lifestyle. You need to meet and get these people to like you enough to help you. You're introduced to this mechanic with your mother. However there are people including:
>liquor store owner
gives you a discount
>liquor store clerk
might drop shit off at your apartment
>neighbor
gives you leftovers
>landlord
let's you be late on rent
>amazon delivery guy
delivers at odd hours when you're awake (sleep schedule is a mechanic and you become nocturnal over time)
>coffee shop owner
lets you steal wifi
And more shit like this. You have stats like NEETbucks, cleanliness, and hunger. You need to make rent and not die of starvation/disease in your shit apartment.
My biggest question is whether I should have it all mundane or have some weird events in there as well. Shit like UMAs in the trash, abductions, etc.

>>382570193
I'd say mostly mundane with a few very rare events. Maybe give the player an option to have those events trigger more often after the initial happening.
>>382573060
why not both?
>>382555705
fuck
>>382570193
>>382573060
Also there is a balance. A lot of these people will try and 'reform' you from being a NEET. You need to get them to like you enough to support you through interacting with them, but not enough that you become reformed or it's a game over.
Essentially it's a shitty management based rogue-lite where you see how long you can go without:
>running out of money and moving back home
>running out of food and starving out
>getting so dirty you die of disease
>getting so nasty in your apartment cockroaches eat you
>having someone help you enough you become reformed and stop being a NEET
The last thing I'm struggling with is the continuation. Should you start with a new NEET somewhere else, or just reset with the same guy. I like the idea of getting new NEETs with different bonuses and negatives (hungry skeleton has to eat more, filthy boye is healthier in dirty conditions, etc.)
Basically you got three things you gotta manage:
>Personal Stats
Health, NeetBucks, Hunger, and Morale. Morale fucks you over if it gets too high or low, on high you become reformed on low you kill yourself.
>Apartment stats
Cleanliness, Utilities, and Furniture. All this shit gives stats and you need certain bits for certain events to trigger.
>Relation Stats
Managing the people who help you support your shit lifestyle. These unlock events that can help and hurt you.
Be a NEET as long as possibleI am developing this while being a NEET. Quitting my job in about two months to NEETdev.

I find traditional stat points to be more suited for rpgs. It would feel more adventurous having to find them through exploration and npc interaction. Imagine if Zelda locked items behind a skill tree.

Good to know I helped in some manner.
Make sure your mundane tasks are actually entertaining too. Seems self explanatory, but they should feel more like minigames than the real deal. Like filling out difficult captchas at the end of an online survey.tfw you realize you know too much about NEETdom.
>>382575478
Much better. One of the perks to emulating gb style is how easy it is to make sprites. Sometime down the line you should make recolor them in greyscale and use a shader to make them green. It will still look like a gb game, but players will have the option to use their preferred palette.
>>382576667

>>382585682
Literally just turnbased with an overworld and grid battle scene, not much else. The visuals will be abstracted and will see frequent re-use rather than lots of variation. However, there will be lots of items, moves, and enemies.

>>382586127 not >>382585529 but he's absolutely right. Along with the monsters being designed to look good on white backgrounds given the AA on their outlines, the backgrounds and monsters are 10 times flashier than the menu, which also lacks any consistent color scheme.

Good to hear, but is that true even with ridiculous amounts of data? I'm talking about things like e.g. 50 different "sword" items with different stats and extra quirks, as well as a player/enemy having a dozen different factors to account for in a skill check.
Isn't there some kind of upper limit to worry about? I'm basically trying to emulate a pen-n-paper RPG.
made this then played powerslave, anyone know where i could get RE 1, 2 and 3 for PC?
>>382586770
If it makes you feel better, the upper limit on gms1's 1d array space is something like 3 million blocks of data. You're not gonna run into problems having a few hundred items if they all use some sort of base.
>>382585118
>>382585492

>>382587172
That's no problem then. All items will use the same stat set plus one or two odd unique quirks each. I'm just new to programming and I have no idea how to properly optimise a game aside from not doing dumb shit like doing draw calls every frame.
>>382587243
Csgo that shit. When your player hits a certain velocity then the player loses a certain velocity thus creating a loop.

The ones that mattered to me were limiting "search and replace" to the whole project instead of allowing it to be used on individual scripts and removing the fucking replace part.
The image editor no longer has a "remove color", but putting a gif in to gms2 is literally asking for your sprites to come out wrong, so get used to making sprite strips.
The tiles system is completely reworked, and it does have some nice features, like autotile and animated tile, but the rest of the system DRASTICALLY limits your ability to use tiles interestingly, like changing tile sets while keeping tile positions, or parallax tiles are both no longer possible in 2.
The rest of my problems with it are nit-picks at best but i've found fewer reasons to use 2 than to not.
>>382590218
That must be pretty annoying but surely something about GMS2 is worth all the rage, right?
Anyone have any idea how I would begin to make something like? Physics driven animations combined with procedural and real time inverse kinematics?
>>382590218
You can search and replace within a script you nigger, stop lying to people.

>>382591880

>>382591880
It's been about 3 months since i last updated gms2 so if they fixed something, great, but you've still provided nothing that's actually better about it. They advertised it as gms1 with better editors, but if you're saying that using editors at all is for idiots then there's also 0 reason to upgrade.
>>382590218
>parallax tiles
If you mean 'like a parallax background but with a tile layer', you can do that by setting the x and y of the layer itself
Just added this thing into the game.
>>382592187
Games run over twice as fast in it, 3D is integrated instead of a separate mode, source control is way better, macros are part of the code instead of a separate window, it has a global find and replace, better markup, and you don't need to use DnD to create script blocks.
There's probably more stuff I've forgotten but still, the reasons I gave above should be more than enough by themselves. The fact that they promised native Mac and Linux releases and already delivered on the Mac version just now is a bonus too, once the Linux version is out I can leave Windows forever.
>>382592854
How does 3D work in GMS? I'm interested in trying it to display spinning models of things as part of a game.
>>382593138
In original GMS you have to switch between 2D and 3D drawing modes and it's a huge pain in the ass. With GMS2 you can draw models directly. You need to keep in mind that the 3D perspective is separate from the 2D camera and you need to manage it manually but other than that it's pretty simple. People have made full 3D games in it but I personally just use it for doors and some background elements (think SoTN).

Sounds nice. I want to use it as a kind of picture-in-picture to look at items in 3D rather their sprite form.
The scope of my last project spawled out of control, so for now I'm shelving it and writing a VN. But I'm going to try making it in GM:S rather than Renpy or something similar so I'm still practicing coding, drawing textboxes, loading external data files/managing them, and so on.

Thanks for the input! I did think about it but I've been having some complaints saying the FOV mechanic is too restrictive. I'll have to do some gameplay testing.
Making new tiles for a town
>>382594647
I like it. What software/plugins do you use?
>>382578709
These monster designs are fucking great
>>382595781
Do you sketch your pixel art in pencil beforehand? Or just kinda wing it? I think the oasis itself looks really great but the sand texture around it clashes horribly.
>>382596163
I just kinda make things as I go.
But the sand tile is old.
Got any better ideas of how to make it better? Is it just the palette or is the wavy motion bad too?
>>382595781
Simplicity is fine ditch that detailed sand garbage and go for a single flat color. You can selectively add slopes and such later.
>>382596285
The texture isn't bad by itself IMO, it's just how screamingly obvious it repeats over the map, it shits on the appearance of the oasis which is clearly hand-crafted and unique all the way through it.
My advice would be to mix up your sand tile a little. Make more sparse, flat tiles like you've done with the grass, and give it some little accents here and there. You can mix those up afterwards the repeats won't be as striking.
You'll switch it from contrasting badly with your oasis to complementing it reasonably well.

FL Studio using soundfonts I got off http://www.williamkage.com/
I'm really fond of the Tales of Phantasia soundfont, but the snare drum comes from the Kirby's Dream Land 3.
>>382596685
>>382596396
Maybe stuff like this?
>>382597906
that's much better, saved
>>382597906
you just need to change the angle of the sand, it doesn't mix with the oasis, its like the oasis is 90º and the sand is from a top down view
finally sat down and worked on the world/environment. It's made of a bunch of models and it's ugly if you see everything but the darkness and bullshit meshes like rocks and weeds will probably hide it enough to look ok.
Here's an in-game pic of the sponge rock zone. It's a big rock with tons of holes and tunnels that lead all kinds of ways. It won't be too dangerous (as in there's danger but you gotta be careless to get fucked) but it'll be easy to get lost in.

Compare the length of the speed vector to your max speed. If its over the max speed, get the unit vector of your speed, and multiply it by your max speed to get the max speed in your current direction.

I have actually stopped working on it for some time now. I was gonna type my current problem here but for some reason just trying to type it made it very clear.
Just need a decent save system now. I really do not want the save system to make the game to easy or something.
i plan to make a mech game where you can switch and mix the parts to suit your needs.
i'm working alone, and am a programmer.
drawing is hard, but manageable.
but i'm absolutely clueless about making musics.
what do i do??
get free but horrible soundtracks online?
learn to music?
wait till the game is completed, then hire someone to do the music? but i have no money for that. nor do i know how expensive is paying people for musics.
I have zero coding experience. How can I make a game to sell and become wealthy?
>>382618069
