Thousands of years ago there were a bunch of humans called shamans, who had psychic powers and used them to guide their fellow man. When they died their souls went into the warp, an alternate dimension shaped by the thoughts and emotions of beings in the material world, but could later return in another body allowing them to reincarnate. Their psychic powers gave them a prophecy of the future, in which the warp became more violent and reincarnation would no longer be possible. In order to continue safeguarding mankind's future, the shamans committed mass suicide and pooled their psychic power to be reborn as a single being, the Emperor - this occurred about 10,000 BC in Anatolia.

The Emperor was an immortal being with immense intelligence and psychic power, which he used to guide the development of humanity. Everything was going fine until about 27,000 AD, when there was an AI rebellion which fucked up humanity, just after which the warp became incredibly violent which cut off all warp travel, the main means of transport, and also possibly caused a bunch of demonic incursions. Mankind's interstellar empire crumbled and Earth regressed to an age of barbarism except with power metal hairdos and wicked sick laser weaponry. The Emperor realised he needed to take a more active role if humanity was to survive and used his vast intellect to genetically engineer a bunch of supersoldiers to conquer Earth. He also made 20 baby supersoldiers from his own DNA, who were meant to command his future armies and provide the genetic information for yet more supersoldiers. However, the gods of Chaos weren't happy about this and used magic to steal the babies and scatter them across the galaxy. The Emperor was still able to conquer Earth with his supersoldiers, then the Moon and Mars (where a bunch of crazy scientists and engineers lived) and using them, set off on his Great Crusade to reunite humanity. It didn't end well.
