A token character is one diverse one among a bunch of regular characters, like having one black character in a cast of white people. At first glance Demoman fits the bill, but the genius of Demoman is that his defining characteristic ISN'T being black, it's being Scottish. In this sense he fits right in, his extremely stereotypical Scottish portrayal fits right in with Heavy the stereotypical Russian military man, or Medic a stereotypical crazy German mad scientist archetype, or Soldier the extremly stereotypical US military man parody, he fits in with the whole cast besides Pyro.
Pyro is the odd one out, but he can't be a token because he's the only one that isn't really anything, he has no regular voice and you can't see his face, he adds nothing to any diversity at all.

CJ and Big Smoke made San Andreas for me.

Sweet was a huge pain in the ass stuck in the gang mentality. You get his ass out of jail and the first thing he wants to know is how the Grove is doing. Fuck the Grove.

Big Smoke had the right idea, but his problem was being prepared to do anything and screw over anyone to get it. I finished the game having more respect for Smoke then I did for Sweet.
