learning ANY new language to a level of fluency is extremely difficult... add on top of that that you'll be solo studying, with people acting like you're wasting your time and constantly talking shit because you're doing something that they don't have the patience to do... learning a new language is the ultimate anti-beta test, because everyone will try to bring you down, but if you succeed you'll feel really good about yourself. (not talking about any western languages, they should be pretty straight forward since they're basically just derivations of latin, i mean east asian languages)
>>
>>382531338
china is harder and you don't have to be a chinafag to think that. the language is literally, incorrect.
>>
>>382530981
>For what purpose?

Poor phonetic variance. The Japanese have way fewer sounds than we do, so having kanji really helps you distinguish between homophones. Also no fucking spaces between tokens. Reading a paragraph of pure hiragana is a nightmare.

They could probably change to something like the roman alphabet with some modifications, but that's hardly going to happen anytime soon.

Look at the diagram. Romance languages are a small subset of all European languages. They are all derived from Proto-Indo-European, which is as far as I remember my undergrad not necessarily a language that actually existed but more of a hypothetical construct. Latin appears much too late to account for other languages that have already existed and during its time.
>>
>>382532864
He means how kanji has kun'yomi and on'yomi which are completely different.

It might seem like a weird concept initially.
>>
>>382532735
Not to be terribly rude, but you seem poorly educated mate. Romance language only applies to languages like Italian, Spanish and French. Germanic languages are an entirely different tree. Same with Slavic. Yes, all languages might have *some* latin words, but the languages aren't based on latin.

And of course learning a related language is easier. Just like it would be easier for a chinese person to learn japanese.

What, are you going to read the fucking Chinese classics that Chinese culture has been limited to for centuries until the Europeans broke it open and the classics quickly turned to Maoist fantasies about the countryside? yes, they do (i'm one of them), although i didn't learn it for kpop. korea actually has really long standing culture but japan basically burned the country to the ground during WW2 and the culture now is basically america-lite with an east asian twist.

Another swing and a miss. Technically, any hanzi could be recognised as a kanji, but in reality the official list is only about 4.5k, with the general public knowing 1.7k, and college graduates/readers being between 2.5-3.5k. Only scholars and spergs who want to pass the kanken know all 4.5k.

Nobody learns that many either in Chinese or Japanese. JLPT N1, which is the highest level of a Japanese test for foreigners, is 2000 kanji. As an educated native, you are expected to know 3500ish. From thereon its mostly optional stuff that you really don't need all that much. Chinese isn't any different. Note that kanji are not the same as vocab since they are usually used with one or two other kanji, which changes the meaning of the word considerably.

I'm living in Japan currently and I speak almost no Japanese at all. I've been here two years. What Japanese I know was taught to me by various girlfriends, which is why I know how to count, or order off a menu, and I forgot half that shit immediately after being taught it. I guess if you're uggo and want to sit around playing vidya without a localization, then by all means learn Japanese, but it's totally unnecessary for me. I can't be bothered to respond to any replies to this post, since I have to take a nap now cause my QT bartender gf is gonna come to my apartment after work so she can wake me up to watch movies and drink champagne. We're going to go to eat Sapporo style ramen tomorrow, and then catch the new Pirates movie (after I fuck her brains out).

Ever pushed into a Japanese girl for the first time, and have her burst into frantic Japanese after having spoken broken English all night? I've literally never been harder in my life.

You can brush off stuff like other people getting jobs by saying they're normies, it's a lot harder when it's people who are doing something you'd give a finger for in a heartbeat. So instead they come up with weak excuses or lash out, because it's a defense mechanism against the reality they don't want to face.

I had a pretty funny experience opening an account at a broker in Japan recently. Essentially, I wanted to know whether one of the ETFs they are selling using physical replication or swaps. The lady in charge of new customers of course didn't know, so she called her boss. The boss didn't know either. Eventually the third guy who was said to be in charge of equities could figure it out. The amount of information provided is fairly meh compared to EU brokers. Not even going to go how very few funds there are in Japan.

Seems like the Japanese public is not hugely excited about investment following the bubble economy either. Daiwa has really nice armchairs in their offices though.

It is really difficult to find out. The individual securities have information provided in both English and Japanese, but short of grabbing a book on the topic there are very few materials documenting the standards in English. Hell, I don't even know if the issuers of ETFs isolate their securities. The capital gains tax is pretty low though. 20.5% or so.
>>
>>382538307
their prospectuses/prosups don't have all of the SPE data regarding the isolation?? generally they will at least have something in there like a partnered legal firm vouching for the "separateness" of the SPEs. i'm used to seeing all of the back end documents so i'm not sure what exactly is available to investors, but i know the prospectus should have all of that info... if not you should ask the issuing director what the hell he's thinking

Several thousand antiquated ones, around three hundred that are technically up to date but only used in words that don't really come up very often these days (like 屯 or 后), and another couple hundred or so that's only used in the menus of very fancy restaurants. Some hiragana that have fallen out of use due to the sounds they represent no longer existing in modern japanese, too. And that's just the stuff I've heard of when getting to around elementary school level.
>>
>>382532825
I keep track of a tier system of "jouzus" with a friend who is also learning Japanese. When you just say ahreegahtoe you'll usually get a 日本語上手ですねー out of a newly met Jap, so it's essentially the elementary particle the system consists of. There is of course a lot of minor variety between the tiers, but the next significant difference is probably at the level of "How long have you been studying Japanes?", though I would argue that you can only cash this one in if you aren't studying at uni. This tier is usually accompanied by a minor jouzu in the form of a "wow that's so short" after you say any amount of years less than 20.
Now, the real top tier shit is when they ask you "How long have you been living in Japan?" when you're just on a trip. This is the true creme de la creme of jouzus, and far too advanced a technique for the average Jap. When you encounter this jouzu you'll know that the Jap you're talking to has learned to empathize with the gaijin on a level that allows them to instinctively understand the cheapness of low-tier jouzus, allowing them to offer the more subtle, high-tier ones. Be wary of their cunning ways.

Just wanted to show you guys that it's OBJECTIVELY harder to learn Japanese. It's been scientifically proven through United Nations and CIA decades of studies of training spies and diplomats that Learning Japanese takes the highest amount of time.

The only reason it looks like Chinese is harder is because people on /v/ have been exposed to the Japanese language one way or the other their entire life through video games/anime/porn. So we already have an edge with Japanese over normal people.

It's still the absolute hardest language to learn for Native English speakers. Literally ANY language on earth is easier to learn than Japanese.

The reverse is also true. English is the hardest language to learn for Japanese people. Literally ANY language is easier to learn than English for Japanese people.

This is also why there are more Japanese people that speak German/French than there are Japanese people speaking fluent English.

Yes there is.

Learn to write the radicals that make up a kanji. After a while writing a kanji you'll just remember of what radicals it's made out of and you'll write better than natives.

Yes and no. Yes, you'll need to repeat writing them a lot. But no, autistically grinding isn't going to help. Space out your study sessions. Keep repeating stuff a couple or days or weeks later. Don't think you just need to write the same thing n times and it'll be alright.
>>
>>382541745

>>382541883
Should I learn the radicals first, before diving into more kanji? Or do it as they come up when I encounter new words?

I usually learn a few kanji a day, when I have the time I do two study sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening. Say I learnt new kanji in the morning, I revise them in the evening before I tackle even more new ones, and so on.

I know that the Ivy League is generally very good at investing and has amazing ROIs, but at least here in Germany the private small investors who are somewhat interested in finance largely trend towards passive index funds due to lower management fees.
>>
>>382542392
You should learn the Radicals as they come up in new words. Learn the stroke order of the radicals. After a while you'll just start to see all kanjis as combinations of radicals of which you individually already know the stroke order of.

It's natural for me to know how to write most kanji even if I have never seen them simply because I know the stroke order of the radicals they are composed of.

You should note though that even natives don't do this shit and usually just write kanji to make it look right and be as fast as possibly while writing it.

That's something I've wondered having only just started. What's the point of "stroke order" when it's invariably not the most efficient way of writing them?

When you write fast, stroke order becomes apparent. Often the pen is still douching the paper and somewhat connects individual strokes. If your stroke order is wrong, the read will immediately see it and think that you are illiterate, which to a Japanese person often implies that you are also not diligent and a bad person to do business with.
>>
>>382542775
You'll be seen as an intellectual and be taken far more seriously on job interviews etc.

Sadly foreigners will be judged more harshly than natives because it's "normal" for natives to know it so they won't really go look in depth on their stroke order. But foreigners in interviews will actually be checked for that shit (personal experience). It takes a couple minutes of extra practice a day and saves you a lot of headaches. Don't skip it during practice.

Knowing stroke order is going to help you with looking up kanji as you are learning. Japanese Google translate is surprisingly accurate at guessing what kanji you are drawing if you draw it by stroke order.

Besides stroke order is not unique to each kanji, it's a rule of a thumb kind of thing where you often start at the top right, horizontal strokes first, then vertical etc.
It's pretty easy, you can get the hang of it pretty fast and it will help out a lot as you are learning nip.

But do you NEEED it to enjoy your loli porn ? No.
>>
Not hard, just tedious.

>If their stroke order is different (I have no idea)
It is

>>382544623
In essence, it's that the faster you write, the more important the stroke order becomes
Since you're not lifting the pen for every stroke, you inadvertently add lines that are technically not supposed to be there
an example: in 目 you could write the horizontal strokes in the middle like a Z

the difference in stroke order between the countries puts these extra lines in different spots
so with the correct stroke order, the extras are where you'd expect
The real question is, how much does it screw with legibility

I'm in the same boat. Here's what you do:
>Download a different browser that you will use solely for japanese.
>While you are studying your nip, close everything else and don't turn it on unless you are done with nip for the day.
>Set short goals you can complete in 20 minutes something like read a page of that grammar, complete that anki rep shit, etc.
>Take a 5 minute break every 20 minute session but no more.
>Take a long 1 hour break after 5-6 sessions if you ever study that long.

It will be hard at first, but it gets easier and it will help with your concentration which will help you with learning in general.

As for how long it takes before being able to watch untranslated material and understand it? Years, depending on the complexity of the material.

I feel like the core2k/6k anki deck was deliberately designed as a trap because of a lot of the definitions are not the most helpful and the example sentences and (especially) the pictures are more confusing than they are helpful.

Like the card could be the word "jump" and the example sentence would use a different form of the word like "the cat jumped up on the table" and the picture would just be a picture of a table and involve no jumping.

I've just been starting to use it and I find using the different tenses to be very helpful if you know anything about languages already. For example, by using different tenses, it let me realize what some conjugations are and how infinitives look before I start too heavily on grammar.

It's helpful because while you need to know what the infinitive is, you will see the word conjugated more often than not.

If you need a specific vocab, you can OCR texts with FineReader, post them on pastebin and read them with YomiChan for Chrome, which allows you to add words directly from your text to your Anki along with the sentence from the text itself. It's even easier if your texts are available as web pages from the start.

Liberal translations and puritan censoring. When you play Final fantasy XIV with Japanese voices and a dragon gives a huge speech in archaic Japanese while the subs just say "aught we search thine succor lest thou perchance mayhaps want to quest" it kinda gets to you after a while. And the whole stuff with nintendo constantly removing things like clothing because bare skin is haram is just silly too

>>
>>382550539
>>382550574

I made a mistake there and mixed 2 things up. Basically every NPC ingame speaks in archaic speak, yet dragons are translated in a way that they actually only say less than 3 words, cause the translators decided dragons are supposedly tired of humans and dont deem them worth of their time

Not who you're talking to buddy, but just as a tip, you don't need sentence markers for each sentence. For example, your second and third sentences don't need 卵は and 私は respectively. Context helps. Good luck :).

>>382539170

>>
>>382551174
Well, each Arabic word has a particular set of roots, or اوزان, which usually amount to 3 letters. From those roots, at least as far as I know currently, there are at least 9 different ways of turning those roots into a verb, and at least 4 tenses: present, past, future, and verbal noun. There are also Arabic words that function the same as certain verbs in English, but are actually counted as nouns, so their conjugation and agreement rules are different. Furthermore, there are at least 3 different forms of sentence structure, probably more I'm forgetting atm, and in general, if you were to translate Arabic sentences directly into English, they would look completely fucked up. Also, you should learn a dialect (I'm doing Egyptian) alongside Modern Standard Arabic, which is used for formal writing, but be warned, there are at least 30-40 different dialects in the Arab countries, and the vocab, and even the grammar, can differ widely between them and from Modern Standard Arabic. So even if you become fluent in a dialect, you still might have a hard time in an Arab country.
