Artifical difficulty with a stupid gimmick. Even on the easiest setting I couldn't beat the first boss after nearly 2 hours of trying so I refunded it.

Something about the game doesn't click for me

The melee is terrible linear tripe that isn't fun at all. The shmup parts feel like someone who has never played a shmup before but saw one once a decade ago and is trying to recreate it from memory. The walking sections are shitty and there's nothing to do except for the secret ending which is barely an ending and more like an Easter egg where you make up a fanfiction in your head about what happened. Every single component to the gameplay is terrible. I would have at least given it credit for being a novel combination of genres but The Red Star already did beat em shmup and did a way better job at it. The music is great and the visuals are nice, but I hate everything about how it plays.

For anyone who is going to buy/pirate this game and play it for the first time, heed my motherfucking warning. Mild spoilers.

Halfway through the game, during a walking segment, you will come across a character who invites you to "stay with her" and stop your quest. If you linger around the area for a few minutes you'll get a secret ending where you give up and decide to live with her. A neat easter egg except for the fact that it DELETES ALL YOUR FUCKING PROGRESS and you have to start from the very beginning. Just keep that autowalk button on.

Dope game other than that, though.

I loved it. Got it in the PS+ of the month, beat the regular game and most bosses on furier and haven't gone back since. The narration has just the right amount of vagueness to keep me interested on the walk between bossfights, and the individual bosses are for the most part fun to fight.

Maybe I just like schlock more than most people, but I really loved The Edge quoting Aristotle when you lost. "Excellence is not an art, it's pure habit. We are what we repeatedly do". The architect gave me major Blame! vibes just because of the resemblance, and even if it would have been cliche I would have really liked him to be a final boss if the story went a different direction, or an optional boss at least.

Story or twist was kinda dumb. Could have been executed a lot better or taken into a better direction entirely. That said, the gameplay was a cool fusion of shmup and hack n slash I've never experienced before. The OST was also godlike.l and I don't even like synthwave all that much.

if you read the How to Play thing in the menu you can learn a few extra tricks, the first boss doesn't teach you all the mechanics. like being able to parry projectiles and charge up your attacks in close combat mode

It's very rare nowadays to find games that are this focused and aren't filled with needless fluff to bloat the game up without making it any more fun or interesting. It was GOTY 2016 for me.

I look forward to the next game from these devs, iirc there was a dev interview where they said they intentionally avoided mainstream ideas for everything with Furi, from gameplay to art design to music, and that's why it sticks out so well and is so focused rather than some open world shit with a hans zimmer soundtrack that tries to do 50 things at the same time and does none of it well. If they keep that design philosophy I will gladly suck their dicks forever.

On what difficulty?

Some fights could go on too long and the "secret boss" giving you a vehicle felt like a needless gimmick but it was a fun game overall with a stellar OST, I just wish the phases transitioned the music better.

I'm still mad that many journalists gave it terrible scores because they got absolutely destroyed.

Really enjoyed the game. The challenge was fun, and I'm glad I stuck with it and played through the whole thing. Great OST too, as others have said.

this, the edge is really easy once you figure out that you can literally interupt nearly everything he does with a melee attack

you don't even need to dodge, you can literally ram your face against the attack button when he does anything not parryable and you'll force him into regular hits which you can parry and then damage him. in furier he is literally the same except faster, so if you can beat him on Furi, not much is different

the star is not too bad on Furi, but a lot of the attacks are larger which leave a lot less room for error. i think the star probably has one of the largest difficulty spikes going from Furi to Furier (I'd say The Burst and The Line are the other two hardest bosses)
