Man, this game is still probably my favorite future racer after all these years.

It's the environments. F-Zero and Wipeout are all on real "tracks," there's not the same kind of levels as Baroonda or Malastare. Those absolutely make the difference. Even the sequel didn't live up to the course design and speed mechanics of the first game. I can only hope that we'll some day get another Episode I Racer.

Looking back, those cgi crashes are not nearly as detailed as I remembered them being. Specifically, Mar Guo's pod crash, I thought was much more spectacular/ particularized in memory than it actually was.

It's not the motion blur. The tracks are so twisted and the speed is so fast that, unless you know the circuit by heart, you won't have enough reaction time to take the next turn, as most of the time turns can't be seen as you approach them.
The first 6 or 7 laps in a track are more similar to a pinball than a race.

Or maybe it's that I'm getting too old to play these new-fangled computerized games

Bullseyes Navior is the best Racer, who needs Accel when you know how to not crash like a bitch.
