I got this for $2.50, played it, and had a lot of fun.

And then the 'final boss fight' was just random mid level mobs running at you 3-4 at a time for 5 minutes, then you press a button and the game ends.

What the fuck was that?

The only bugs I had the whole time was one failed trigger event and there was an autosave like 20 seconds earlier, and the engine noise of my vehicle would cut out at random times.

the game had some issues with development.

it was orginally supposed to be a pc game. zenimax demanded it be on consoles. they had to make major changes to the design and scope of the game as well as the technology that was running the game. the megatexture idea for example needed to be dialed back so it could run on consoles. zenimax then demanded the game run entirely from the disc with no install. this further redirected valuable remaining development time. carmack also demanded the game run at 60 fps on consoles because anything less feels like ass and he didn't want to deliver a shit product.

so the final years of development were spent mostly dealing with the console problem instead of finishing the game and it really shows, especially when you hit the second island for the final act of the game.

no it was always a shooter. the car elements were just going to be a much larger aspect of the game. MASSIVE open Mad Max style areas. they had to completely change the scope of the game. instead of large areas it's mostly canyons with lots of S bends so the view distance that the console has to render is never too far.

By just playing the game and it DOES look like that even on the highest settings.
Back then there were even threads on the Steam forums where people tried to out-shit each other with the worst looking areas they could find.

I couldnt finish rage because how underpowered guns felt. It was long time ago since i played rage but i think that point blank shotgun to the head didnt even oneshot kill basic soldiers
