>>
>>382505737
Only in RPGs does your dumbass character get to go around giving people advise they didn't ask for.

They need to make a game where you make one of these 'moral choices' and the NPC replies with, "Shut up, bitch, nobody asked you." But I get that these are meant to be escapist powertrip fantasies, not en emulation of the player's everyday life.

There is a real underlying psychological horror show going on in RPGs, one in which you and you alone have the power to dictate reality. Of course you know what's best, you are a very smart person!
>>
>>382506098
yeah I only remember that one charisma check when you make yourself look like a spastic to get thrown in spellhold and if you fail the guy literally says "oh wow if you had more charisma I guess I would've believed you haha wink wink"
>>
>>382500784
that's almost every rpg with dialogue options though. even supposedly well written ones like new vegas and planescape are usually just:

>1. I am reasonable and cooperative
>2. I am reasonable and cooperative (lie)
>3. Negative response, but so exaggerated that it's guaranteed to generate a hostile reaction
>4. Gibe me moni.
>5. Smartass answer
>6. Longwinded pseudo-intellectual response that's probably out of character for what you're roleplaying

>>382506302
Yeah, I wanted to play Pillars of Eternity as the 'dark' Paladin faction. They lore text made it sound like they're the ones who they call in to solve problems swiftly and completely.

Unfortunately all of the 'dark' dialogue options and choices amounted to "YOU DESERVED TO GET RAPED I'LL KILL YOU NOW GIVE ME ALL YOUR MONEY"
>>
>>382506441
dialogue trees don't actually do what they're supposed to, which is let the player act out a variety of characters. instead they make it so it's impossible for your characters to act at all except for the most shallow emoting. the only reason they exist at all is because idiots are convinced that a game can't be a rpg without them.
>>
>>382500784
It was the first game of its kind and it was made by a team that had never shipped a game. They kept the dialogue system simple for BG1.

>>
>>382506562
Unless you are a mage, of course. Mages are treated with the respect they deserve.

>I want to get aboard the ship.
>No one may enter the ship! I have my orders! I shall kill anyone who enters the ship without authorization. In the name of Innos, I shall defend the ship with my life.
>You question the wish of a Fire Magician?
>(nervous) No, of course not. May Innos forgive me. The Magicians of Fire are the guardians of the wisdom of Innos ... whoever doubts them, doubts Innos and forfeits any right to mercy.
>What happens if I go aboard?
>(nervous) I shall kill ... I mean, stop you.
>You would attack a Fire Magician?
>(nervous) I would never lay a hand on a magician.
>So what would you do if I went aboard?
>(sheepishly) Nothing, Sir.
>I will go aboard now.
>(nervous) You mustn't do that, Lord Hagen's orders were quite clear.
>Do Lord Hagen's orders include me, too?
>(nervous) I don't know.
>Just think - would Lord Hagen dare to suspect a magician of theft?
>I don't believe that.
>For the last time: Let me board the ship!
>(nervous) Understood. You may go on board.

Even when they steal ships.

>>382499675
No one considers the BG games some of the best written games ever, anon. They're better written than shit like Pillars of Eternity and modern Bioware but the only thing special about them is the consistent tabletop tone of a mixture of silly shit, current topical humor, and straight faced D&D bullshit.

Been playing Dragonspear since I picked it up during the Steam sale and the writing is actually the area it differs the most from the originals. Other than having way fucking more voice acting of course. The BG series always assumed a level of knowledge of the setting since if you're a fat bearded nerd playing a D&D videogame you probably know what you're doing, but in a modern expansion to an old-ass game which you would think would be even more likely to have an audience that knows what they're doing, it starts you off with "OH NO THERE ARE UNDEAD TALK TO THIS CLERIC TO LEARN WHAT UNDEAD MEANS" when you're around 7th level.
Other than that bitching though, really been enjoying the encounter design.

So any version before 3.0 has rape in it? Thanks for the heads up anon, I'll look into it. Been doing a replay through the EEs since I slowly picked them up for cheap so that seems like a good excuse to get all up ins some Imoen.

Mildly annoyed that I went through BG1 just before they added achievements though. Can't be assed to cheat and unlock them but they were added like a month after I finished my run, and only a couple triggered when I loaded it up recently to import into Dragonspear.

Imoen-v1202 it's the last one and you still download from the official page but you need original BG2, no EE. In the EE version (v3.0+) they updated the mod with new content and also rewrite the old content.

I also enjoyed the SoD encounter design and how similar it was to Icewind Dale. I was very pleased with the game overall. It's a shame that the innovative and interesting combat was entirely overshadowed by Beamdog's mediocre (and overly wordy) writing. I don't understand why video game developers these days are so in love with their shitty words.

>>382510885
It is a shame, but I guess we just have to take it as a pleasant surprise. Had you told me 5 years ago that BG1 of all fucking games would be getting a significant new expansion I would've thought you were crazy. The fact that the encounter design was good is even more surprising.

It's kinda funny actually, I bitched about PoE already, but Obsidian getting a sackful of crowd funding to make their dream RPG and I consider it pretty bottom of the barrel compared to the Infinity Engine games, but fucking Beamdog of all places has interesting and varied combat. And it's not just the AD&D ruleset or the Infinity Engine because PST is a shining example that that doesn't automatically mean good combat.

That's actually based. Thanks anon, I've never read this before
>>
>>382511348
>Beamdog makes a great expansion to BG1 sort of out of nowhere
>Obisidan hypes up some boring, bland pabulum

You're right, that was unexpected. Maybe it's because Beamdog's goals were relatively more modest than Obsidian's; Beamdog wanted to fill in a gap in an existing franchise, while Obsidian wanted to launch a new one with an engine, lore, and mechanics assembled from scratch.
