I actually liked both and hated to see them compete because I thought all the vidya heroes should be pals. I made a little Mega Man RPG on paper when I was like 5 and I made Sonic one of the bad guys but then I felt bad because I didn't want to have you fight Sonic cuz Sonic was a cool guy, so I drew over him with black marker and gave him some extra red spikes, and to make it EXTRA clear I had him announce "I'm Blade! You're DEAD!"

Needless to say, Mario Sonic and Mega Man all being in Smash 4 was a rather significant experience for me.

Sonic, but I grew up with a Genesis.

Sonic lost hard, but Mania exists now so ultimately i'm happy.

These days I adore them both, but for 2D platforming chops with Nintendo, I honestly prefer DK to Mario. I also think Sonic 3 & Knuckles is better than any Mario game, but that's obviously bias on my part. Mario Odyssey and Sonic Mania are my two most hyped games this year.

This is how it is with me to. Sonic CD, Sonic 3K, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Unleashed put Sonic over Mario for me. I feel like both have been slacking since this decade started however. 2010+ hasn't been kind to either of them. I still have my old DS library. It was all the Sonic Rush and Advance games mixed with a bunch of those Mario GBA ports and Super Star Saga as well as the DS ones like 64 DS. I like both but will always prefer Sonic.

Unleashed is a pretty clean sweep though. Daytime stages are delicious, and if you weren't bad at the game, Night time stages could be flown through. It got repetitive with its combat though, which was my biggest issue.

My dad liked Sega and Sonic more then Mario so it's what I grew up with. Mario was always "that other game" to me and whenever I got to try it at a friend's house or something it felt kinda surreal. I prefer Sonic gameplay over Mario though.

Eh, unless you're talking about NSMB exclusively, that's not really true.
Keep in mind, Mario basically wrote the book on platformers. The entire genre took heavy influence from SMB.

But I will agree that the best Sonic game is more fun than the best Mario game.
