What went wrong?

It was released in a time when Capcom couldn't get away with making shitty business decisions and live off their e-sports community and it was convenient for both the company and the playerbase to just go back to supporting SF4.

It's a shame too, because SFxT wasn't even as bad as SFV is. It wasn't a really good game, but it wasn't offensively terrible. The dlc gems and the ON DISC AT LAUNCH characters that they didn't even let you buy until a year after release just buried it further.

If it had been a SF game with Tekken characters, it would have been so cool.

All the bad aspects snowballed hard.

Despite all that, I didn't think it was THAT bad of a game either.
I'd probably still consider gameplay of SFV better but at least Sfxt released with standard things like arcade, story, etc.

Having SF4 as a fallback was probably huge. When sfv came out they got rid of sf4 hard, probably 'insisted' tournament organizers remove it from their lineup.
