If you reduce it to 0 HP before it runs out of repairs it just instantly heals back up to full. You have to make it repair 5 times.

I don't think this quite counts as a JRPG exactly, but I've been meaning to replay it ever since someone posted up the Underworld theme a month or so back on /v/, which to this day remains one of the songs of my childhood that has stuck with me. I started this morning and I'm already pretty fucking hyped. It's been so long that I only very vaguely remember it so it's fresh all over again what to do. Even if it won't be a surprise how it goes overall this time around all the little details are still pretty awesome.

The translation on the ds version is pretty accurate, more then the snes/ps1 version is. Only a few things were cut, in the Japanese version Ayla makes a comment to Marle that her breasts are too small and that she won't be able to breastfeed her kid, this was cut as I guess that was too much for them. Still it is by far the best way to play it for English only speakers.

I'm gonna start with something simple but more fun then it has any right to be to get me back in the swing of things. Then maybe I'll do ToP or some other SNES classic, then I'll start moving up generations. I have 4 weeks, wonder if I can get in 1 each of SNES/PS1/PS2 generations. Answer is almost definitely "No", since I'm an OCD completionist autist.

What are some JRPGs with a great sense of adventure that give you a world to explore?

Two anons in this thread are apparently playing it but if you're ok with SNES then Terranigma practically defines "a world to explore". Tales of Phantasia is another SNES one with a pretty fantastic world to cruise around. I mean, if you liked that in FF7 plenty of the other FFs, Chrono series, and so forth might well scratch your itch.

Maybe it starts off kinda slow, but the card fighting system is really unique and fun. The pre rendered backgrounds look really great and the music is good.
I guess in terms of story and characters it can be a bit cliché at times but overall I think it's a great game.

grandia is ur game. it embodies adventure. it also has a gergous orchestrated soundtrack. truly a gem that game.

then there is star ocean 2, no shit, it will remind you of ffVIIa lot in that some aspects of it are copied and watered down from ffVII, but others are just plain better.

Not good. BoFI has the typical snes to gba port problems (worse color, sound, and screensize). BoFII not only has these as well but has the infamous translation that you should avoid at all costs.

Play the snes BoFI version and the retranslation of BoFII. The BoFII English localization is one of the worst ever made, maybe THE worst.

I don't mind linearity two much if the game does it like FFVII and gives you some moments where that pacing is broken up and you can do what you want, or if the game still takes you to many locations.

The drop is rarely as stark as SOs' though. It's usually when we go from medieval to Wacky Space that Star Ocean remembers that it still doesn't know how to do Star Ocean. Oddly, SO3 avoids this by starting with Wacky Space, but then instead veers off into Wacky Metaphysics (this is like 3/4ths into the game though).

Like I can sort of piece together the plot points from Disc 1 from memory, but I couldn't tell you anything about what happened in Disc 2 other than "Err, get an airship, kill the Evil Old Men" . (I also realize how that last sentence applies to most JRPGs, but for SO2 that *all* I remember about disc 2.)

>>382499685
Grandia and Wild Arms pull off the adventure bit by pulling you to many new locations, so there's that.

I really recommend Wild Arms (even though it doesn't get as much love nowadays). The in-game graphics are ass, by the spritework is amazing and the characters and music are lovely. Cecilia is one of my favorite JRPG characters.

I should have been clear, what I wanted was to save her but really all of Zeal, something about that place was really amazing to me, maybe how you arrive at it and the whole leadup and everything. At any rate I wanted some secret non-canon end where you win, save Zeal and Schala becomes queen.

I'm actually one of the apparently rare fags on /v/ who really liked CT but also liked CC quite well too, even if it wasn't CT2. Some parts of it did leave me kind of unsatisfied though that included.

I get you. I don't hate CC but as a game it just isn't very fun to play. I appreciate what it tried to be as a sequel, a game that didn't feel it needed to be everything it's predecesor was, but fails as a actual videogame.

Sorry to shill but this article does a great job I feel of summing it up exactly. A bit old, from 2010, but holds true I feel.

Honestly Kato, the lead writer of all three chrono games, is more of a writer then a game designer. He's actually famous for being the guy who made the cutscene's in the nes ninja gaiden game, his idea. A brilliant man but he needs a good designer to work with, why CT was as good as it is. I believe after CC he quit as square and him had a ton of disputes. Not sure what happened to him since.

Nothing wrong with an older article on such an old game, hell that's actually a pretty new article for PS1 era. I respect your feeling there, and I know that article sums up how a large contingent on /v/ feels too, but I can't say I agree one bit either. This may be a key bit:
>The fact that it means to be a direct continuation of Chrono Trigger's story in spite of being so radically different almost seems an affront to its predecessor.
It never felt like it meant to be a "direct continuation". If anything they seemed to go out of there way to NOT make it a direct continuation. They stuck it off in its own entire side area and specifically made it impossible to have anything to do with the mainland, they even changed the one same character you might have had (Magus) to be a new one instead. Yeah it's the same universe, but given that there are multiple dimensions shown it's hard to say which of the two, if either of them given the events of the game, would actually be "canon". To me it really felt like
>"We can't possibly make a CT2 that will live up to CT, but the universe is still cool, so let's try to make something that'll be different enough to be judged on its own with only loose inspiration from CT."
And I appreciated that. I remain glad to this day that Squaresoft of back then DIDN'T do what modern AAA companies would 100% do, which would be pump out direct sequels with zero deviation until they drove it into the fucking ground.

For a PS1-era JRPG I also though the game system was pretty fun fwiw. It didn't have the perfect gelling and magic that CT did but I absolutely think it's still a top tier JRPG.
>>
>>382501329
>I still mostly stand by my argument that Chrono Cross is more of an adventure/story game than an RPG.
Now this really makes no sense to me. I can get a lot of disappointments people have, but in pure trappings how is it different from any other JRPG of that era whatsoever? It's got a bunch of characters you follow along, some main ones and some side ones. You find out their stories. You use them in turn-based combat. You level them up and use different mechanics, collect special weapons/armors/items for them, etc to make them stronger and decide what role they'll play. If you don't consider CC "an RPG" I don't get how you consider any of the PS1 FFs RPGs either, or most of the other games in this thread.

my millenium faggot ass used to hate jrpg until i tried out 5th gen JRPGs,It's a shame there aren't any new rpgs that come out with experimental mechanics like games such as SaGa frontier used to do.

I almost want to play Chrono Trigger again but I was in the middle of DQIV then I've got FF7 and Lost Odyssey on the backlog. I was at the part where you get the transformation spell and track down Psaro Manslayer after meeting his sister but I have no idea where to go. Have never played any FF and I started Lost Odyssey with those Kaim dream things giving me feels right out the gate but I want to play an rpg that's not too long and not too short like Chrono Trigger so what do I play?

Is Lost Odyssey this fucking heavy the whole time? >mfw

Gonna try and actually finish Lost Odyssey finally. Last time I tried I lost disc 3 and couldn't finish it, although I also wasn't reading all of the memories. I just finished reading Hanna's Departure and was surprisingly affected by it, which is rare for me since I typically find Japanese writing to be laughable.

I remember being younger and always hoping for a new chrono game but as I've got older I've started to feel the very opposite. I think the game is a bit of a mess but I'm happy that it does serve as a proper ending. If anything I would wish for a remake, the game seems pretty rushed in sections and it really could have used more time in development.
>>
>>382503142
>>Is Lost Odyssey this fucking heavy the whole time?

Not even remotely. The memories are the heaviest (and best thing about LO), but the game's actual story is your standard jrpg fare.
>>

DQ8 is pretty boring compared to Nocturne, both story and gameplay wise

Not sure who wrote the actual stories, but I recall it being said that they got an actual writer/professor to do the translations of them, which is why they turned out so great.

Nocturne.

I know I'll be crucified for this but DQVIII is overrated in my opinion. It is a great game but I probably wouldn't even put it in my top five DQ games, I don't know how it makes people's top jrpgs.

You mean you'll play anything except Tales or Mana games, right? Because being interested solely in those two is well, questionable. I'd say you have a long way to go if it was. But I myself am also interested in getting into FF, hence why I'm downloading Bravely Default as we speak.

I already know that about the twist and that the second half is a reused asset shitshow, and yet I've heard in spite of it it's a better game than End Layer. But if it doesn't end up to my liking there's always Xenogears, which I need to play before picking up the new Xeno game.
>>
>>382504456
No mana games are pretty good

Tales of games are even better. Next to those two series not many others compare. Kingdom Hearts and Disgaea are kind of pale comparisons, and other games like Radiata Stories, Odin Sphere, Muramasa and stuff are hardly contenders.
>>
>>382502234

Well this goes into my pedantry/idea of what defines a RPG (let's say JRPG for now). Follow along if you're bored.

First let's go ahead and do away with the notion that a game can only be one genre. Games, especially modern games, are a hybrid of a whole bunch of systems. GTA V has RPG mechanics but isn't an RPG. That said, we'll say a game belongs to a genre if it *focuses* on certain mechanics. Tales are (action-)RPGs because they focus a lot on the RPG bits. GTA is a sandbox game because it focuses on sandbox bits.

Second, I'll just go ahead and throw out my definition of JRPGs now: 1) Story/Adventure. 2) Ways of progressing your characters without progressing the game/story. Both elements need to be heavily emphasized for a game to be a JRPG.

The first point is straightforward (although there can be a separate discussion about it), but the second is key. A "leveling" system is the most obvious non-story progression system. It can be skill points or upgrading parts or proficiencies - it doesn't matter. Non-story progression is an important bit, and this includes things like side-quests since they're expanding on side-stories. The player has to be able to influence how strong they are through *labor*, without having to progress the game. (My own thinking is that this ties with how Japanese students/salarymen are expected to "grind" away at their work/jobs - and that's the established "path to success".) If you get stronger just because in Stage 10 you get a bigger gun, that's not a JRPG. That's just a different stage in the adventure game. If you can go out into the field and kill rabbits until you grow a gun, then you might count as a JRPG. In other words, if you can't grind, it's not a JRPG.
>>
>>382502234
>>382504836

(Part 2)

How about games with currency systems? FPSes where you kill things for money then buy better guns? Aren't those non-story progression systems? Well that goes back to the "emphasis" - are you expected to get better at shooting, or grind to better equipment? Is that the emphasis of the gameplay?

Are most Final Fantasies JRPGs? Yes, there's story/adventure and you can grind.
Are most Zelda JRPGs? No. You can't grind other than something like buying more arrows. You have to do shrines or sidequests to get more hearts.
Is Mega Man 7 an RPG? No. Sure, you can grind to buy parts, but that's not a major part of the game. The emphasis is on platforming and jump-and-shootan.
Is Mega Man Battle Network an RPG? I would say yes, although border-line. Yes, your progression is certainly constrained by the story by the selection of chips you can get, but you can be expected to grind your way into a better chip-set at any point in the game.

By this point it should be clear to you why I don't consider CC that much of a JRPG then - its "progression" system is heavily tied to the story. CC's Star system means that your progression is almost *entirely* tied to story progression. The minor stat increases are capped by your Stars, which basically means they're just some extra work to "unlock" your level. How powerful you are is almost completely determined how many bosses you've fought and side-quests you've done.
>>
>>382502234
>>382504836
>>382504878

Now you ask - why isn't the "star" system just considered a series of level caps? If I allow MMBN as a JRPG even though your option for getting stronger clearly progress with the game, why doesn't that apply to CC? After all, stars are basically mini-level-caps for your stat gains. Here, I go back to the emphasis argument. In almost every FF you have a maximum of 99 levels. In CC you have a maximum of 99 stars. Let's by honest - your stars are your levels. Your stat gains just need to warm up to get activated.

What about magic? Grinding for magic isn't really a big part of CC - more of it has to do with arranging and setting up your attacks/magic. Having good magic obviously helps but grinding for it is rarely key. Ditto for equipment.

tl;dr CC has almost no "leveling" system. So it's more or less just an adventure game, with equipment.

tl;dr tl;dr I'm bored

>>382504878
>>382504926
It's a interesting discussion, sadly one that can't be done on /v/.

I have seen quite a few definitions of it. I think one that stuck out to me was "if your character talks then it is not a rpg". I don't agree with it but I find ot interesting still, I guess it really highlights the strength of silent protagonists and the change in the fifth gen, where jrpg protagonists started talking and, quite a lot at that.
>>
>>382503575
If you like job systems V is good. (I wouldn't recommend Bravely Default until you've played V and other FFs.)

If you like story, VI and IX are good. X is also good, although I think VI/IX are easier entry-points. X has a couple rough patches.

If you like old-school, FFIV is good. FFI is good if you like even more old-school.
>>
>>382504275
son do you even know L I T T L E M O N E Y
>>
>>382504456
Don't fall for the "you need to replay the game 3 times" meme.

That part of the game is basically a boss rush and side-quest time. You're expected to turn off encounters (an ability explicitly given to you in the game), kill the bosses (with new dialogue and setups), and speed through those segments. Because that's also around the point in the game where you become completely broken.

And enjoy the job system, music, and awesome UI son. I wish I could experience Bravely again for the first time.
>>
>>382505224
I'm gonna try V because it's the town favorite here. I tried before but I stopped for whatever reason.

Then I'm going to play VIII. I don't know if I can stomach VII because of the graphics.

I've already played VI and X, I have a copy of XIII that I enjoyed already and I'm supposed to like XII but we'll see how far that gets me.
>>
>>382505191
True, /v/ moves too fast.

People get too stuck on the "role-playing" aspect of RPGs. I could go into how "role-playing" has two distinct meanings (which nicely ties into the JRPG/WRPG split), but let's just say that RPG is a label and don't read too much into the wording.
>>
>>382504663
from both series there's been very few entries I really enjoyed to the point I'd say I was a fan. the only mana game I liked was SD3. with Tales it was Abyss. So I at first got really excited to try other games in those series but found them mostly underwhelming. I wouldn't say those are the *only* good games but they seem to have a couple of flukes and a lot of duds overall. The Disgaea games and Vanillaware stuff are the opposite, there's 1 or 2 duds but they're pretty consistent quality-wise.
>>382505424
That's what I figured, it doesn't sound all that unusual from JRPG fare. The only FF games I've played are Tactics and I really liked the job changing in that, so I'm hoping the overall aesthetic of BD will ease me in before picking up something like FFV.
>>
>>382505463
For graphics I always say give it half-an-hour or so for your eyes to adjust. If not you can wait, but I think it's not so bad.

Wait, you enjoyed XIII so I'm not allowed to like you as a person.
>>
>>382505613
My recommendation to your is to exploit every system they give you. BD adds in a ton of things and people who instinctively react that those systems are "stupid" end up not making full use of them. (Like complaining that encounter rates are too high when they give you a way to adjust encounters)

May sound weird but sometimes when not even playing a game it'll get stuck in my head and become a constant subject of thought. Been thinking about LaL a lot lately and I feel so weird about it.
