Automata has a fairly subtle but really powerful love story that i consider one of the best in the entirety of video games.
It's hidden under multiple layers of story with some revelations hitting like a fucking brick, but when you sort everything out and look at more subtle details you understand how important it was for overall narrative.

Super Robot Wars Alpha. Part of the game adapts the Macross episode Virgin Road which is the greatest love story ever told.

So, one of the good guys, not even the main character, beats an enemy giantess in a space battle, right? The giantess shrinks down to human size and infiltrates the Macross to seek revenge but she doesn't know who to look for. She finds the guy when he beats her at a videogame (I know this fighting style...!). She tells him to meet her later, he thinks it's a date, it's actually a duel to the death. One super romantic knife fight later they fall in love and get married the next day, flying off into battle to die a glorious death on their wedding day.

Not really incredible, but it was cute. What really made it work was getting the right choices to make some of the scenes play out nicely and cute by either embarrassing Connie, or just playing to the idea of the two being awkward as they grew closer. Shame the game didn't flesh it out more so their relationship felt full-on by the endgame.
