That's why I said talking about it with /v/ is the best part, that includes making fun of the event. Also gotta be there for when embarassing shit happens and who knows, maybe a good run like the Tetris one or Jak & Daxter one. Here's hoping they all die in the Super Metroid run like it almost happened last time, that'd be hilarious.

Because GDQs have been soulless garbage since 2014. Speedrunning in general has really gone into the shitter during the last 3 or 4 years as well. Everyone in a position of leadership or power used those in the worst ways possible for the community.
>>
>>382488772
Right, because he broke multiple rules and continued to break them multiple times after being explicitly told to stop breaking them. He wasn't banned forever, mind you, just from submitting for a year. He could've still attended, and his ban from submitting is lifted now.

If you think this was an overreaction on the part of the marathon, you have no idea how real life works.
>>
>>382489009
There are no positions of leadership or power in the speedrunning community. It's a single player hobby where people collaborate together. There are no authorities.
>>
>>382489249
You know nothing. SRL, SDA and GDQ were all huge influential forces. There is no reason to speedrun without a community to compete and interact with.
>>
>>382486005
It's such a shame he's always suffering from Mega AIDS and can never attend any of the events.
>>
>>382489787
>SRL, SDA and GDQ were all huge influential forces.
These were run by the community, they did not "lead" the community.
>There is no reason to speedrun without a community to compete and interact with.
This is nonsense. If this were the case, speedrunning would have never started.

>run by the community

Wrong. They were powered by the community, but like any site, there are were founders and admins. Cosmo and his butt buddies were the ones who founded SRL, and you see how fucking crazy he went. There was tons of other assorted drama which resulted in a ton of people drifting away from the community, either quitting altogether or going on to stream some shit like Mario Maker.
>>
>>382490472
The HL1 runner's pb is 33 minutes, and less than 4 minutes from the record. You don't understand how estimates work, do you? They're the highest possible time under the assumption that literally everything goes wrong.

Who the fuck wants to hear this shit constantly? Just shut the fuck up and let the runner talk about the game. No one gives a fuck about your $5 donation and using donations as a means of attention whoring is the worst.

These events would instantly be 10000000 better if they stopped the reading those retarded donation messages.

All charities are scams. The entire concept of charity is one huge scam.

What "charity" is is you paying someone else to do good deeds on your behalf. Literally the laziest scummiest way to feel good about yourself. Not to mention because of what they do charity organizations are almost never held accountable and have become some of the most poorly organized institutions you can imagine.

If you thought governments are terrible at managing money then of boy you're in for a shock when you figure out how wasteful charities are.

If you want to help those in need go to your local homeless shelter and volunteer. Go to some African shithole and volunteer. That's real charity.

I really don't get the Super Metroid race hate memes for GDQ. Regardless of whether it's at GDQ or someone like Zoast practicing on Twitch, the reality is that most Any% runs are fucked. The current meta route is legitimately difficult to the point to where getting hit a few extra times means a game over, at multiple point in the game, even as early as Phantoon. Hell, even bad RNG screwing you over, where you get much less missile drops than you need on the way to mother brain bricks the run. By the time you make it to Mother Brain, the current route has the BARE MINIMUM required missiles to complete the first phase. Missing one missile is a game over.

Super Metroid ALWAYS has to be a race, so that there's a chance that at least ONE person will live and complete the run using the current Any% route. That's just HOW IT IS.

Unless you want the shitshow you had about a year or two ago where Straevaras attempted an RBO (Reverse Boss Order) run and literally died 4 or 5 times throughout the run, without safety saving, and had to resort to backup saves on multiple occasions just to complete the run. And the funniest shit was him asking for his time at the end, as if at any point after the first death there was any semblance of the run (which used backup saves not from the current run) being legitimate anyways.

The Super Metroid race is hands down better than the hours of wasted time on their traditional awful games block, where they could instead just be playing other big fan favorite speedruns instead.

Then it grew even bigger (over twice as big, in fact) when it started enforcing the rules it. It always had the rules, they were just never really enforced until they and the charity started taking it more seriously.

And the rules are perfectly reasonable, you can read them yourself on the website. It is a family friendly event.

In case you forgot, before 2015, GDQ was basically ran almost exclusively through volunteer work. After that, the charities started paying the higher up staff members to run the events.

That's why the event went to shit, it isn't GDQ anymore, its a PCF event. They use the guise that it is growing, but in reality video streaming and twitch is growing, much faster than the event is growing too.

This is factual, the shills don't like it, but they accept it.

Regarding acceptable behavior on stream as a runner or commentator

As a runner or commentator your time on camera acts as a representation of not only yourself, but of Games Done Quick, the charity itself, as well as our sponsors and partners. As this representation is of great importance here are some guidelines to follow with what is and is not considered acceptable behavior while appearing on stream.

First and foremost, we encourage a fun, entertaining, and casual environment on the stream. GDQs are about great people doing great things for those in need, and we want all our runners and commentators to be able to enjoy that. The more positive and fun you can be, the more that same presence is reflected out to all those watching.

The topic and tone is at the runner’s discretion. Every runner at our events is unique and has their own approach to how they showcase their skills for the event. We do not have hard and fast rules on what you choose to commentate during your run. In general giving informative and fun commentary about your game is a great way to go about setting the tone for your run, but we encourage each runner to approach this in whatever way they feel most comfortable with. We also understand that not every runner is comfortable commentating while playing and it is perfectly acceptable to let that responsibility fall to your couch crew.

For reference, here is a list of ideas that have received positive feedback with regards to commentary:

Informative explanations about the game and run itself, whether it be explaining the route, the techniques employed during the run, glitches involved, or just the general evolution of the speedrun.

Personal anecdotes about runners' experiences with the game or the community behind the game.
Input on design choices or factoids about the game and it’s development.

These are just examples, and if you have questions, always feel free to ask the staff.

Regarding behavior on stream

Any speech or behavior that would fall under a violation of the harassment policy outlined in the rules is not permitted on stream. This includes remarks that would be considered "joking" or "tongue in cheek" in nature. There are clear lines we expect not to be crossed in the harassment policy, those lines are to be respected while on stream.

Swearing should be avoided while on stream. An occasional swear is not going to draw any ire from staff, but we expect runners and commentators to keep the content of the run "PG" in nature as Games Done Quick is a family friendly event both in person and on stream. If you cannot control your language while being a representative on our stream then you will be subject to not being allowed to perform again as a runner or commentator in the future.

Avoid topics that are polarizing or controversial in nature. Avoid demonstrations of those topics via speaking, written material, clothing, etc. Examples include, but are not limited to:

Religious demonstrations or proselytizing
Political demonstrations, campaign messages, or agendas.
Any sort of grandstanding intended to create controversy.
Religious clothing, such as a cross, hijab, or kippah, is not against the rules. To be clear, we are interested only in blocking religious demonstrations or proselytizing, not religious practices.

Remember that both staff members and the current producer on tech have the ability to give instructions through the headsets during your run. If a staff member requests you to stop a topic of discussion, behavior, or action during your run, you are expected to follow that request. Refusal or willfully ignoring staff input or warnings during your run will be subject to losing the privilege to perform runs/commentary at future events, or the immediate removal from the stream in extreme cases.

The nature of acceptable behavior, speech, and activity on stream is always at Games Done Quick staff discretion.

All of this is fine and common practice. The trouble is them actively stating on stream "all of the money goes to the charity" when it's clear that's not where all of the money ends up. Where the money ends up is the information people would consider relevant, but they intentionally omit this because people knowing the truth would invariably reduce the donation amount.

This is unethical.

if it's unethical for GDQ to not state X budget allocation of the charity, it then becomes unethical for GDQ to not state where the rest of the charity's budget is allocated.

You know when you go to a store and they have a little box for you to drop coins into for scoliosis or diabetes or whatever? Have you ever noticed that the entire budget for the charity isn't written out on that box? The same concept applies here.

Charities pay businesses to fundraise for them. Every charity does this, without exception. You know the box I talked about earlier? The business that manufactured the box got paid by the charity to manufacture the box. The company that owns the charity's headquarters? They get paid by the charity to lease the headquarters. The box manufcaturer and the landlord company are under no moral or legal obligation to disclose that the charity made these purchases. It is the charity's job to disclose this themselves.

And yes, if someone is stupid enough to donate to a charity without learning where their money is going, they deserve to lose their money. Just like how if someone is stupid enough to eat at McDonald's every day of their life without doing research on how trans fats raise your cholesterol levels, then they deserve to die of a heart attack. It is an individual's responsibility to be an informed consumer, especially in a society where there is already plenty of regulation mandating transparency on relevant information.

Where do you draw the line for what is an adequate amount of information to spoon feed consumers? At what point should the individual be obligated to take personal responsibility for where their own money ends up? You could keep tacking on more and more and more until everything is so bloated with information it becomes needlessly convoluted. Should every penny be specifically accounted for? Should every ingredient and its long term affect on the human body be listed on the menu at a restaurant? When does it stop?

>Just like how if someone is stupid enough to eat at McDonald's every day of their life without doing research on how trans fats raise your cholesterol levels, then they deserve to die of a heart attack

I agree with everything else in your post, but just FYI, no major fast food chain has transfats in their food products, especially not ones that participate in business in New York.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/16/health/nyc-fat-ban-paying-off/index.html

It has been in effect at least since 2007, so by now it's a 10 year old law.

McDonald's and other fast food chains still serves plenty of saturated fats, though. So if your post stated saturated fats instead, it'd be 100% kino.

>And yes, if someone is stupid enough to donate to a charity without learning where their money is going, they deserve to lose their money
This is unethical. You're insisting that people that believe lies deserve to be robbed.

>Where do you draw the line for what is an adequate amount of information to spoon feed consumers?
You misunderstand. It's not that GDQ gets paid that is the problem. GDQ making it appear as though they do not actually take home a percentage of what they raise is the problem. By insisting all of the money goes to the charity and not stating they get a percentage of that money back they are intentionally misleading the people who are donating. The donators are being told in a way that is very hard to misinterpret "we don't get any of this money, ever" when the truth is the opposite.

That's the line. An organization working for a charity should disclose how much money that charity pays them. GDQ does this. That organization should not pretend they do not get paid, or be unclear at all with their words. This is what makes it unethical. If people were told the truth donation amounts would be less, which is a CLEAR indicator that people do not want to support GDQ; they only want to support the charity. GDQ knows this but lies through omission anyway. Unethical.

That's the charity's job.

When you go to a McDonald's and you see the little box for donations next to the cash register, the box does not state "WE PAY MCDONALDS FOR THIS." It's not the businesses responsibility to do this. It's the charity's. And the charity does do that, their budget is easily accessible for anyone to view.

MSF actually pays actual doctors to go to foreign countries and carry out actual procedures.

Are you an actual doctor? If not, it's a reasonable thing to give them some money to do this on your behalf. Division of labor.

Granted, there are some big charities that mismanage money (red cross comes to mind) but you can be smart about how you do it. Bill Gates would be retarded to insist on doing all his philanthropic ventures in person, as it's not a reasonable use of his time and money. The idea scales downwards.

You're intentionally ignoring the point. The box does not state ALL of the money goes to the charity, so the box example doesn't break any ethical boundaries.

GDQ staff and announcers constantly state all of the money goes to the charity. This is not how it works. They get paid by the charities. They intentionally make it seem like they do not while they are asking for donations knowing full well a percentage of what they raise will end up in their pockets. They do not disclose this to the people donating.

All they have to do to stop being unethical is stop claiming all of the money goes to the charity. That's all. Full stop. Everything else they do is above board and common practice. Misleading people while taking their money is the unethical part.

I'm aware. That's common practice like I said. You're still intentionally ignoring the point. Leading people to believe none of it comes back is the unethical part. I don't know how many different ways this can be expressed to you. Just because money changes hands doesn't mean accountability for that money disappears. GDQ does disclose how much money the charity pays them, on their forum, that nobody goes to. The overwhelming majority of people donating believe the lie that GDQ does not profit from the event. If they became aware of this fact they would donate less. GDQ naturally wants to avoid this so they do not disclose it WHEN IT WOULD BE ETHICAL TO DO SO. They are lying through omission when they explicitly state all of the money goes to the charity and don't immediately follow it up with "and then the charity gives us a percentage of that money".

All they need to do is stop claiming all of it goes to the charity, or include that they receive a percentage of what they raise later. Either would close the loop of disclosure and the people donating would not be lied to.

If the box is stating all of the money goes to the charity then the box is lying and the box should disclose how much of that money does not go to the charity. If the box only implies the money goes to the charity it is under no ethical obligation to disclose how much money does not go to the charity. It's a pretty thin line, but it's a line that everyone understand exists and why very few things associated with charities explicitly state that all of the money goes to the charity if some of it ends up in the pockets of the box people.

>Do you have any evidence that this is the case, or did you just yank this out of your ass?
When people are told "100% of the donations are going directly to the charity" they assume this means "none of it goes to us" because that's effectively what 100% means. 100% goes to the charity. 100% stays with the charity. 100% of that money goes towards the CAUSE the charity endorses. Many organizations actually DO donate 100% of what they raise and they DO NOT take kickbacks. They are not funded by the charity at all. They are a true charitable organization. THOSE organizations can legitimately claim 100% of the proceeds go to the charity because none of it comes back. Do you understand the necessary distinction? Do you understand why GDQ making a claim like that is not the same as a non-profit organization making that claim?

Your argument is literally "if people allow themselves to be mislead they don't deserve their money". This is what makes you unfit to argue about ethics. You are endorsing con artists and defending their actions as ethical.
