Actvision has always been greedy with games. They usually release a crappy vanilla version of a game intentionally (crash bandicoot) and then make a few minor improvements and tweaks and release it again the following year under a sequel identity (crash bandicoot 2) they continue to leave out fixes and bugs so they can further release the game yearly at full price (crash bandicoot 3)

It was an early title on a breakout system that wanted to compete with Nintendo, and one of the few platformers on a disc-based console that wasn't dogshit.

Also, it was born in the era of every half-decent property being profitable "enough" to at least try a sequel.
