I get chills, not because of the bold and stark depiction of the apocalyptic wasteland in the background or the confident composure of the raider, implying that he has committed a cocoon of savage acts in order to adapt to his environment.

But the imagery of the raider himself.

The fact that he's wearing a Brotherhood of Steel Helmet, signifies that the Brotherhood of Steel, one of the most powerful factions of the wasteland, have been torn asunder by their own Achilles heel. Believing that they can save humanity by harvesting old world technology and yet, they keep it within the confines of their isolated society. This type of thinking led to them withering out and ultimately, their demise.

Seeing a savage tribal wearing the helmet of one of humanities last bastions for technological salvation... Its unnerving

I'm glad they brought this moral dilemma back in New Vegas.

They're raiders in Power Armor.

I would believe the helmet is just an excuse. They didn't want to give a face to the player character so they just did this instead.

This.
The BoS was never humanity's salvation.
They meant well at the beginning, but later they went full autism. Literally Enclave 2.0
>>
>>382474601
Or maybe that was fallout4 sucks and here is why. Shit i dont remember which one it was
>>
>>382474606
what bethesda did to BoS is truly atrocious. in FO3 they were literally reduced to "cool-armors-from-original-fallout dudes" and in FO4 they are basically fascists or nazis or whatever.
>>
>>382475108
At least you can use them as a step tool to get power armor and good weapons in every Fallout game.
>>
>>382475523
That's true.
Literally the only good thing about the BoS.
>>
>>382475426
Idk the contrast between the Western and Eastern Brotherhood is pretty neat. One stuck to their ways and almost died out because of it and the other realized how powerful they could become and ran with it.

Who said they weren't? The BoS was humanities last bastion because they harbored the potential capabilities for the transition from a primal-medieval age to an semi-industrial one. The only roadblock from allowing that transition was their conservative and ruthless ideology.

You can see the potential effects of the BoS by looking at the Followers of the Apocalypse, using science and technology to cure humanities maladaptation to the enviroment

They are (at least up until FO2 and in NV they could be considered this too) literally cruaders of the Wasteland

They are not raiders however they do behave like them, but they are really smart and well trained. I actually enjoy when every member acts like they are in a brotherhood, its a shame that joining them would imply that everyone else that isn't part of the BoS would get fucked and that you wouldn't get to play with whatever toy you might find in the wasteland.

Obsidian can keep writing about the West Coast and Bethesda can keep writing about the East. The themes and mood are radically different yet don't interact which can be seen as good.

I always found it odd why civilization is in shambles in the East Coast despite the fact California has been through a lot of shit yet is structurally more sound despite mutant and Legion skirmishes and conflicts.
>>

I found it odd too, California should be in complete chaos since its so affluent, both geographically and geopolitical. Maybe Bethesda can't write interesting conflicts for shit
>>
>>382476747
Because normies want to go crawling around a post apocalyptic world
>>
>>382476747
Because thanks to fucking FO3 and 4 people think Fallout is about laser guns, deathclaws and post-apocalyptic shannenigans.

Seriously i can't believe i'm saying this about a videogame but FO4 has to be the least fucking realistic game i've ever played, there is literally no way that amount of time would have happened and people are still living in trash shacks while there is a sci-fi bullshit Institute underground filled with dumb scientists who are STILL using building terminals with UIs from the 50s and ROUND FUCKING MONITORS.

Who the hell though that round monitors would be a fucking good idea? I bet they thought "We gotta make the Institute look advanced!". Not even the camera can zoom in enough to read what's on the fucking terminals.

I don't see why that technology couldn't exist concurrently with '50s design principles? Not like they cared enough to go and redesign 200-year-old TV sets. Don't forget that the Big MT in FO:NV used the same screens, and they somehow developed machine-based sentience and teleportation.

Either way the implication and inferences that OP has read from this loading screen image is more or less true. After the first fallout, the brotherhood of steel has fallen hard. And throughout the rest of the series, every time we meet them, they have declined in one way or another or have changed drastically to adapt or provide a practical meaning to their actions.

>>
>>382474606

To be fair, they never really sold that even in the first two games. In Fallout 1, their canon ending is protecting the wasteland from the super mutants with minimal casualties on both sides. In Fallout 2, they're irrelevant but wholly benevolent.
>>
>>382482510
Which makes me wonder why the loading screen in FO1 features the BoS at all, they aren't THAT related to the main quest

Fallout 5 should be about the big power players of the wastes (NCR, brotherhoods mid-west and east) meeting and fighting a unification war. Something that will close out the series for good, new america rises from the ashes and you get to pick the winner.

Like F2, that's probably supposed to be the Vault Dweller, rather than a random paladin. If so, they probably just wanted to show off the end-game armour and hide the character's face.
>>
>>382485923
Nick's a synth, one of the people the BoS want to wipe out, so it's no wonder he's not a fan. He's actually one of the better written characters in the game. His quest is shit but his dialogue is usually pretty good, especially his snarky banter
Don't bother buying it though. It's worse than Bethesda's usual and somehow feels even more like an mmo than Skyrim and 3
>>
>>382485923
>>382487348

The thing is that Nick is interesting because he resembles the old 50s detective stereotype which a lot of people like.

The confrontation between him and the Triggermen who keep him trapped is really interesting and should've been a mayor thing to develop in fucking Boston of all places.

A Fallout set in Boston should've been like the 50's "The Departed", coupled with a lot of Mafia shit and Irish shannenigans.

why is this such a common misconception?

it was hammered home hard as hell in fallout 2 that the enclave was the illuminati.
>>
>>382490450
Because it's not a misconception at all and they literally are the government.
>>
>>382489679
>>382490450

Its funny because the Enclave are what the BoS should've been and it makes me wonder if that was the point.

I really love how well they represent FO2's themes, especially Frank Horrigan and the Remnants later in NV.
>>
>>382474606
does anyone actually think the fallout 4 BoS aren't acting out of necessity? sure they're hardliners but I found the ethos of the BoS depicted in fallout 4 to be reasonable
>>
>>382491385
I don't think so, i feel like they read the first sentence Wiki about the BoS and went with that.

The BoS would be the least likely to nuke the Institute, i mean you can clearly see they can teleport and shit why wouldn't you confiscate all that technology?

They literally act like a worse version of the Enclave in 4
>>
>>382490814
But, the BoS are all sons of the original army, why the fuck they declared war against the enclave?
>>
>>382490814
>I really love how well [the Enclave] represent FO2's themes, especially Frank Horrigan and the Remnants later in NV.

How so?
>>
>>382490653
no they are not. the government doesn't exist anymore. the enclave never had any official ties to the government. they were a secret society before the war and exist as a plot device to be the blatantly evil illuminati stand in. congratulations if you actually sympathized with the intentionally and obviously hollow patriotism thing that was draped everywhere, because you were supposed to immediately see that as the bullshit it was.

>>382490814
the bos only exist as an analogue to wasteland's guardians of the old order. both only exist so the developers could shoehorn in some 40k space marine type enemies with minimal effort.
>>
>>382491758
it would have made more sense if they only destroyed the synth-related technology and confiscated the rest. what I should have said is most of their actions make sense to me, it's been a while since I played 4
>>
>>382491917
The Enclave is basically "AMERICA, FUCK YEAH". They think they are the government and everything else doesn't matter, everything they do is the right thing, if you are not with them, then you are a mutie, if you are a mutie they have jurisdiction to do whatever the fuck they want with you, at least that's what most of their leaders act like. They don't care about your problems, how well you are doing or how much help you need, if they want someting they will kill you and take it, because they do it for the glory of the nation.

Its why you can't really talk down Frank Horrigan, you are just a mutie to him, you have to die and so everyone who isn't with them so they can start over.

FO2's themes are basically intolerance, nationalism and chavism. You see this in many places in the game.

>lots of people don't like tribals and many outright will ignore you simply because you are one
>Broken Hills has humans and mutants trying to live together but they also fear eachother at the same time to the point they actually plot against eachother to eliminate one side
>Vault City prefers to kill every Ghoul in Gecko without thinking they are people with problems too and without caring that their own survival is depending on Gecko
>the NCR just wants to annex everyone and goes as far as to commit crimes in order to make other towns too afraid and accept being part of the NCR to be safe
>Vault 13 shows this problem too in a reduced scale, some of the humans are afraid of how powerful and smart the Deathclaws have become and think they need to be put down or else they will turn on humanity

I can't really see the themes reflected in New Reno, just seems like good ol' mafia shannenigans.
>>
>>382474606
>citing Fallout 4
wrong.

The BoS was an order made from surviving members of the U.S. army. Their mission was to help mankind by restoring it to working order. As time went on they learned that technology in the wrong hands is what led to the destruction of the world. So they began chapters and sending agents out to horde technology they deemed dangerous out of the public's hands.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to explain this. I was hoping that /v/ actually reads. I was hoping /v/ at least played the first or second Fallout games.
