Is this game worth getting? I would've bought it on launch if I had the money, but now I keep hearing a lot of people rip on it for rng. Recent steam reviews are a bit bad too.

It's ok. I still prefer something like XCOM though.

>>

I thought recent steam reviews were bad because of butthurt poorfags that couldn't/wouldn't buy the new DLC as the update that added it also tweaked the vanilla game to be balanced for owners of the DLC.

There is RNG but it can be severely mitagated with a proper playstyle, at lot like XCOM.

At the end of the day your soldier in full coverage and smoke may still be crit and die instantly, but the chances of that happening are in extremely low.

Vestal aka heal slut to EVERY PARTY. Fuck stress, nobody can die if you manage to heal them before the bleed ticks again.

Combine highwayman advance (riposte) with antiquarians protect me for half the team invincible + free damage.

4th spot for damage dealer specialized for era you go in. Leper, doggo master, helion, crusader, doctor.

Other characters are cool too, but really subpar. You want your heroes to stay alive, hit any enemy rank, able to work even when shuffled and BRING LOOT PAYED IN BLOOD.

Healslut, bandit and jew bitch works so good.

Also the mark party with characters who deal extra damage to marked things is good, but clunky in most encounters. Why wasting turn marking when you can heal / kill it?

Only if you get half your roster cursed like a fucking retard. Otherwise it's easily managable since almost every fight and curio in the courtyard gives multiple blood vials so you can carry home like 4 dozen of them and it takes like 4-5 weeks on average for a cursed character to be forced to drink a single vial. You'll have plenty to last you until you can get invitations.
>>
>>382474354
>heal slut fine
I had champion runs where heal slut managed to keep like 3 characters alive on constant death doors crit hits in the same turn.

Also
>not having every run as gold + thouse upgrade thingies
With the newest update you have even more gold than before dlc. She is like jew. Carry more, find more and stack more items into same slot. The only time you dont bring her is when killing boss.

With her you can actually afford to lock positive quirks and clean the bad ones. Until you upgrade vital parts of hamlet to max, you want her in any medium run for maximum effect.

Still as the game plays, you never have optimal party composition. You simply take whoever is in the roster without schyzo and depression.
>>
>>382474645
Jester got nerfed though.
>>
>>382473318
In XCOM theres several abilities that give you a guarantee hit but in Darkest Dungeon everythings random expect heals. And having soldier in full cover 99% of the time saves him from being critted but again in Darkest Dungeon theres no covers or crit resistances/immunities. Also crit in that game is 2x instead of 1.5x Also theres this heal that is 0-15 healing done? Just an example how ridiculous the dicerolls can be.

Darkest Dungeon is far more RNG based than XCOM unfortunately.

>There is RNG but it can be severely mitigated with a proper playstyle, at lot like XCOM.
You're talking shit here. In XCOM there is always something you can do to improve your chances. The game is also set up around the ability to set up contingencies, compare the turn structure in XCOM to Darkest. In Darkest Dungeon you're much more subject to the whims of RNG. The game is more about the premission than the mission itself, really. There are things you can do but ultimately if the RNG decides to dick you there's nothing you can do.

It doesn't mean it's a bad game, they're trying to do very different things. You're not the underdog in Darkest Dungeon, you're a dude getting dicked on so you're forced to do horrible things. It's meant to be a harrowing, stressful and hopeless experience rather than the harrowing, stressful but hopeful experience of XCOM.
>>
>>382476454
why would they even change this? I thought solo/finale was just a fun thing and not actually effective
>>
>>382472258
Game is fairly manageable until champion dungeons in which you have to use every skill to eek by after reeling through enemy crits so you can just regain your HP and lower your stress.
>>
>>382476608

>>
>>382476262
ideally by choosing more offensive heroes over the vestal you're not getting into trouble in the first place, bring another small heal in case of RNG

>>382476584
keep in mind XCOM's budget is orders of magnitude higher than DD, being a simpler game the RNG is understandable
>>
>>382475471
>more gold
>carry more
>find more
>stack more items into same slot
how exactly do you do all these things?

>>
>>382475570
It's true that XCOM has better offensive options to get around RNG (grenades/shotguns). At least with this game though you have decent defensive options if the RNG goes bad.
Death's door prevents you from getting 1shot (unless two fast enemies both randomly focus the same target). Good heals and guarding can keep someone up for a long time through multiple death doors. And if things go really bad you can try and retreat. Not saying it's on par with XCOM but I think it's manageable.
>>
>>382476774
>undo the debuff
did they fuck with all the self-debuff moves? figure hellion can rape everything by chugging herbs way more than a jester
>>
>>382477215
>Death's door prevents you from getting 1shot (unless two fast enemies both randomly focus the same target)
Guess you've never experienced the crit into applying bleed/blight deaths.
>>
>>382477164
Budget has not really much to do with it anon. You don't funnel money into some kind of game design machine that suddenly makes player action more important. It was a deliberate design choice on their part. Not a bad choice either, just trying to do something notably and illustratively different from XCOM.
>>

>>
>yet another class that doesn't like abom

>>382477213
>carry more
By having one jew lady in your team you can stack more loot in inventory. Like 2500 gold instead of 1500? Even the gems, shields and stuff should stack to higher numbers.
>find more
You want to have selected her as active hero before clicking on any curio, chest, doors whatever. That way you can get gold small and big antiquaries you cant get normally in game for even more cash.
>buy skeleton ~2 skeleton keys and apply them to LOCKED chests.

>pro tip
Before you open chest with loot in the last room, turn light down. It will generate even more loot. In this game walking in dark for whatever reason generates more loot (and more crits and stress).

Holy shit this game is frustrating. Not because of the mechanics, really, but because of how it slows down to a fucking crawl when all you want to do is play out the scenarios.

Why do enemies have to announce their attacks for two seconds before they perform them, instead of having a combat log? It's such an incredibly frustrating experience being forced to watch this slow combat play out, especially when you're at a disadvantage and just watching your characters get pummeled.

Games like Dustforce don't gloat player failure, it just moves on and gives you control. This game however gloats and revels in player frustration. Pinnacle RPGs or even survival horror games don't do this. Darkest dungeon doesn't seem to have the same interest in good pacing. All it gives me is a headache, which is incredibly sad because i like the characters.

How clunky is it to play on console/controller?
>>
>>382481036
I'm doing pc with xbox controller. the controls are clunky I guess, and the icons are for playstation. I put up with it though, gotta go comfy. they've got some work to do, I'm unable to open up the districts screen, and whenever I use a consumable the game ignores my inputs for 1s
>>
>>382481036
It takes some getting used to. Literally every button is used and it can be a bit confusing but I got used to it pretty fast. My only complaint is there is controllers customization and I really would like to swap the functions of the d-pad and the left analog stick. They make you navigate menus/select skills and targets/move your characters with the stick when in dungeons and it just feels bad. D-pad would be so much better for that stuff.
>>
>>382481036
A bit, you have to get use to it before it feels a bit more natural.
>>
>>382481408
Meant to say there is NO controller customization which is horrendous. Also I hate that you can't even move in dungeons unless you're on the map screen and every time you interact with a curio it puts you in the inventory screen forcing you to switch back again just to move. I've accidentally deleted some shit because of this. Also there's no way to mass buy provisions to my knowledge for some unknown reason. Don't see why it couldn't have just been hold X like to reform your party position in dungeons.

It needs more work bottom line.

Now they went and nerfed his beast bile ability which was a good ability to use in regular form if you didn't want to transform. He just fucking sucks. I don't care what people say. occultists are shit primary healers in champion dungeons that arent ezmode ruins

with the deaths door mechanic, reliability and consistency are far more valuable than omgepic crits that half the time go off on someone barely injured, resulting in 30 overheal. the group heal alone makes the vestal infinitely more useful, with the variety of groupwide attacks enemies have

not that you cant torture yourself with a solo occultist healer, but its definitely not the ideal choice

just reading it with the weird "invisible hunger check tiles"... like okay, just make sure they generate one per dungeon or something, in a random spot if they want to code it that way...

but clearly the normal check should just be like the light-level, every X increase hunger, and if it gets too much you start taking stress/health hits or something... kinda doubling up though, so it would probably just work if they removed it entirely and just rolled the idea into camping.

not terribly creative, but it fits perfectly with darkest dungeon's design.

Steam says I got 220+ hours, but I'm sure it's closer to 300. Honestly, this is one of those games where it's better to go in with a bit of knowledge of it already.

Hunger ain't that big of a problem, just bring 12 pieces on small, then every bit of food for medium and large, just in case. You also don't need all 8 pieces to camp, it just gives you health and stress heal. Similar thing for torches, bring 8 for small dungeon, 16 for Medium, and 20 for Large. Then buy one of each provision. Only time you should ever actually stock up on provisions is if you're going to fight the boss, which getting loot should be the ignored. If your heroes are in a bad spot, retreat. It's best to lose money, than lose valuable heroes.

Lastly, if Abomination was rid of that restriction, do you have any idea how broken some parties would be? Hell, the strongest party to date is still Occ, Jester, Abom, Abom. The game ain't perfect, and some heroes are near worthless like the Highwayman, but there are obvious ways to avoid these problems some people have.

Radiant isn't really baby mode. It's more of a question of, "Do I want to spend 80+ hours trying to beat this or half of that?" The dungeoning is still the same and the enemies are the same as in normal mode. It's just reducing the grind and making it easier to form parties thanks to lighter level restrictions.
>>
>>382471198
I haven't played for a really long time but I'd run vestal, graverobber, rogue and crusader. I would give the melee the abilities to move forward so you'd start the graverobber on 3rd slot, rogue on crusader on second and rogue on first and just juggle around the line up.

decently good team that could deal with any bullshit party shuffling abilities can hit like a truck if you need to focus fire
>>
I'm a big baby who is fine with most of the difficulty but I have my panties in a bunch about a few mechanics
Radiant mode seems like maybe too many changes, but I do want to mod/edit out the level restrictions for dungeons just because, as I mentioned before, I'm a big baby and insist on playing things my own way at my own pace
Also possibly relaxing stack carrying sizes
But I haven't actually played Radiant mode, so maybe I'm better off taking the bigger change?

also is there any mod that makes hunger mechanics less absolutely fucking terrible
>>
>>382489774
Level restrictions is one of the things that make sense.

The game is not that brutal, if you fear the game you wont get any enjoyment. Play radiant if you dotn want something too grindy
>>

>>
>>382489548
He said its baby mode if you've already beat the game on the original difficulty. Which makes sense.

Also do I have to go into a dungeon for the stress relieving to kick in? Or can I just idle on the estate screen?

Only have three party members who aren't freaking the fuck out
>>
>>382489548

most of the changes are anti-grind measures

however, the changed level caps for dungeons is straight up making the game easier, unless you were to follow the old rules. there's also some tweak to lighting where you get more benefit for being not in the dark.

the level cap one is big though, making it significantly easier (not just faster) to obtain gold, by farming lower level dungeons with overleveled heroes

This is a good idea. I stopped playing the game because the level restrictions felt like artificial padding.

The level restrictions are shit-tier implementation that honestly kind of break the game for no good reason. There are so many ways they could make bringing high level characters actually balanced in lower level dungeons from making them take a cut of the earnings, gaining no XP and/or tweaking how difficult darkness made the game, meaning that high level characters are the only real ones that can tackle pitch black dungeons.

Do what you want, you paid for it. The restrictions are dumb. But to answer your question: Yes you are. And that's OK.

Radiant has an additional rank of experienced heroes you can get in the stagecoach so you can potentially get lvl 4s. I think less experience required to level. Dungeon level restrictions are lowered. Up to lvl 4 can go to apprentice and 5/6 can go to veteran still. Also you can reuse characters for DD missions which is the really big time saver.

The level restrictions are one of the two biggest padding elements of the game. It often forces you to use shit teams because you have nothing else available because everyone out leveled a range or to flat out delete characters to make room for the possibility of future runs. The best part is end-game when you start realizing you want a certain class but don't have it and then have to somehow find a way to level that class up to max without having any other characters at that level. Great fun.

Infestation goes down once you kill a boss in the dlc area and crimson curse is cured for your roster but then the infestation level will start to rise again with the presence of the next new boss. And yes you need an invitation just for ONE attempt at the dungeon. They are gotten from gatekeeper enemies at high infestation. It's a guaranteed drop but you have to kill them fast because they run away actually.

As for the courtyard it's always a boss run but the length is Epic. Meaning the place is gigantic and you'll have to leave but you'll get no penalty for doing so and can pick back up right where you left once you go back in. Provided you have another invitation that is.

>>382493691
the DLC sounds like a shitshow... are they likely to fix all that, or are they sticking with it?
>>
>>382493290
It does increase, but only lowers when you defeat one of the bosses. You get them at max, but now they patched it to where you can get one for free after completing the first dungeon. Also, the invitations drop like fucking crazy. I'm not even joking, which is fine. Because you need one to go on one, and you will have to leave them because they are massive. There are four dungeons, but it will take more than 4 expeditions to complete them. So, in a sense, they do end in a boss. It's not a timebomb, and it's nowhere near as annoying as it sounds.
>>
>>382493564
FASTER
>>
>>382490012

You can go into a dungeon then immediately retreat to advance the week in your hamlet. The guys you send in and retreat with will get stressed, but its better than 3 manning a short run and getting them killed.

What? How? Dungeons cost 2500-4000 to enter with provisions and their quest payout alone pay you back immediately. The gold you find in the dungeons should be more then enough to pay for quirk removal AND stress reduction for everyone who went into said dungeon. Stop making shit parties.

>>
>>382469284
So what skills are best for Hellions? I followed the game for a bit during early access but only just bought it, it looks like they got shit on with so many debuffs after spells get used

I haven't played for more than a few hours but after reading through skill lists, it looks like Marking is super strong since spells that combo off it are good even on their own (like collect bounty) but with a mark are absurd for little investment. Like the axe swing does as much damage as everyone else's vanilla auto attack but with a mark does 90% bonus.

My current set up feels mediocre and I'm stuck on the prophet who hides behind pews because I lack ranged damage, I use a hellion, the starter crusader, a grave robber and a vestal or plague doctor
>>
>>382495381
I wrecked the collector and I was going to use the Bounty Hunter for marking but be kept on being thrown into the pot

and I didn't have a Helion at the right rank (I think my only one is at 2)

they really need to increase the barracks size to count for the new classes. I don't think you can even have 2 of each class at this rate.
>>
>>382495650
You don't have as much wiggle room with how many classes there are but for the most part you don't need to have extras of every class because you only bring them to maybe one or two areas tops.

Reminder.
>>
>>382495529
For the Hellion, Breakthrough is really the only "bad" ability. Yawp has a high chance to stun the first stun, which is incredibly useful. You always want to prevent enemies from taking a turn, that's the key to winning. Bleed Out, I think is the one hits very front row, is kind of pointless if you have the other bleeding ability. I believe it's called If It Bleeds. Adrenaline Rush is useful in the warrens, but pointless if you have a dedicated healer. She's one of the most versatile heroes you can have, I love her.
If you're having trouble with the Prophet, I'd bring Hellion with Iron Swan, A Bounty Hunter with Caltrops and Marking, A Vestal with Group heal, and lastly, an Arbalast with Battlefield Bandage, Marks and Sniper Shot. Completely ignore the pews, they give you 1.5k in gold, not even worth the chance. BUT, if you can stun the Prophet, might be worth destroying the front pew so your Hellion can use If It Bleeds and hit the third rank for bleed, since the Prophet has NO resistance to bleed. Prophet is made easy with a Vestal who has group heal. Rubble of Ruin will ALWAYS be used at the very end of the round. Meaning, if you use group heal, even if it heals for one point of health, all of you are off death's door. Also, bring some Antivenom for when he uses fulminate.

You may want a Man at Arms for the Prophet. He will guard the rubble rain for your guys. Occultist is very good on that fight, not for the heal but for his damage debuff which can effectively neuter the rubble damage. After that you want some guys that can either hit rank 3/4. The first pew has low HP so you can rend through it like nothing and have a Bounty Hunter, Abomination, and another Man at Arms that can hit that rank. Hellion and Arbalest can hit the back row frequently.

When a curious character interacts with a curio by themselves, you can still use an item. Use whichever item is good for that curio while the character is saying stuff.
>>
>>382490017
That's still mostly reducing the grind for gold though. Level 5 and 6 dungeons are just as hard and can be even worse if you've gotten soft on doing a bunch of low level dungeons with overpowered characters. I got my ass kicked in going into a long champion dungeon the first time because I wasn't expecting how high the accuracy of the enemies was.

1. Never put people with the curse and without it in the same building.

2. Kill bloodsuckers fast as possible.

3. Every time you kill a boss in the courtyard the curse is lifted from your entire roster.

Only other tip is to get the district that gives you 2 blood every week. Once you get it the curse becomes more of a buff than something that really needs managing.
>>
>>382501636

the curse won't show up until you go there. the court is labeled a low level dungeon, but its really meant for well geared level 2's or 3's. a lot of the negative reviews on steam are from people that go in there with 0's or 1's with no trinkets and get their asses beat like a jamboy. go in there with a decent group that is leveled and you'll be fine.
>>
>>382501787
>>382501281

Oh and by bloodsuckers I meant those little mosquito fuckers. The fat heads tend to use that blight move more often than not so aren't as likely to curse you. They're also pretty much stun immune.

It's the best way to get the set trinkets. There's also a ton of loot in the place provided you bring enough supplies.

Once you get the ability to cure the curse it turns into more of a boon with massive on demand damage buff from drinking blood.
>>
>>382496397
Thanks for the advice. I went and learned iron swan on my hellion and got a houndmaster, I cured Dismas klepto for free during an event so now I can actually use him.

Beat the prophet by only using single target abilities that could hit the fourth rank, much easier that way.

Current team is hellion first rank, houndmaster second rank, highwayman third rank and grave robber fourth rank.

Do I need to do anything special before preparing to fight the hag?

>memorizing/wiki the dungeon before you run
serious question:
how do most people handle points of interest or whatever they're called (curios?) in the dungeon? do you just use whatever item seems most logical? do you look up the ideal answer online? do you trial and error your way through?
>>
>>382503675
i use wiki. I think it's the only way to play the game if you want to progress without losing your sanity.
>>
>>382503675
At first I clicked all of them without using any item. Then I wasted a few thousand gold trying items that didn't work on them

So now I've figured out that
Sacks of loot and backpacks are safe (to my knowledge)
Display cabinets and heirloom chests require a skeleton key
Confession booths and holy idols require holy water
And I don't fuck with anything else
>>
>>382503675
At the start, I would guess once, and then use whatever seemed to be the opposite of the effect.

Did it cause a bleed? Probably Bandages
Blight? If it's kind of disease looking, herbs, poison look is anti-venom.
Religiousy? Holy Water

But i'm old and jaded now, so nowadays I just check the wiki.
>>

>adventurers are actually dispensable
I hate this fucking meme. They're not dispensable the moment they hit levels where they refuse to do lower level dungeons or you've at all upgraded them. You've invested so much money and time into them at that point that they are entirely indispensable. This isn't like XCOM where you're going to have a harder time but you can totally bring a bunch of rookies on a hard mission.

the problem is that fights seldom last so long. What made finale really good is that, coupled with jester's speed, it would instantly delete 1 enemy effectively turning the fight into a 4v3

Now you need to waste turns buffing your finale damage and by the time you get it to pre-nerf amounts the fight is basically over anyways. I agree it is a cool mechanic, but it kinda ruined the skill
>>
>>382504342
The way I've been using it is to be able to delete or at least heavily damage their tankiest unit at the end of a fight, so I can focus on taking out supports and squishies while Jester starts charging up. It's still good for burst damage.
>>
>>382490368
The only things i change to vanilla (and that I encourage everyone else to do) are:
>Firewood stacks
>Grain sacks, medicines, holy relics, and all those 'collect 3 of these' objects stack
>Abomination can team up with religious characters (it was a meme restriction imposed by the backer anyways, and Red Hook themselves said on an AMA that they are going to change the restriction system to be quirk-based)

>>
>>382504990
>...Which leads to having dudes that are actually dispensable
No, I agree. Dudes are way more dispensable in DD than XCOM. Both require time investment (XCOM doesn't need cash investment per-unit other than the initial recruitment cost, something DD doesn't have -- unless you can't salvage the corpse in which case you lose any equipped items)
But DD's infinite timer means all you ever really lose is time. XCOM you can fuck over an entire campaign irrevocably and have to start over.

Frankly I prefer DD's method. I'm okay with a lot of timers and restrictions but I have spending however many hours on a campaign and just having it come out to failure. Crashing and burning and having to be salvaged from the ashes I could do, but "lol start over" pisses me off more.

Is bounty hunter/houndmaster actually good or am I just being lucky?
>>
>>382508204
Hound Master is fantastic. Bounty Hunter has a lot of great utility in being positioned in many places and still being very effective. BH really benefits from marking as well. Get an Occultist and Arbalest with them and you can have a beat down mark party.

Depends on the curio, some of them are fine others are not worth the risk.

Seems like a good skill for bosses, wasn't there a guy who killed the last boss by buffing a character so much it killed it in one attack? He wasn't even forced to delete 3 of his characters.

>However, there is a brief window of time during a forced curio interaction where the player may still use a supply item. The appropriate supply item for the curio must be right-clicked from the party's inventory after the hero indicates that they are about to perform a forced interaction but before the interaction resolves. This will yield the same results as if a non-forced curio interaction had been performed using the supply item. As this window of opportunity is very small, success often requires having the inventory window open beforehand, along with good knowledge of your party's quirks.

look maite half of the game's "fun" is equal to jumpscares in a horror game, which means literally pissing yourself because some shit happened because you didn't had previous knowledge. That being said it's not for everyone and it's not for me, if you are like me you'll either check the wiki or carry all the supplies you need to guarantee success with the curio's interaction.

This also brings me to the next point, much of the game is about maximizing your chance of success and being prepared, if you don't want to check stuff beforehand be ready to use the characters as expendable so you can learn about a dungeon.
