Enforcer main here for 3 years, if you want I can write a guide later (just got home), although it's going to be a fucking wall of text and plenty of people dislike that.

In the meantime, two ambiguous tips.
1: use ledges and only ledges to protect and serve. Most of the time they'll protect you from funballs and you can easily fall back when danger is imminent.
2: most people think the shield is absolute shit and a "never use it in glass" kind of thing. It's not. But you need to learn in which situations it works and which ones it will kill you. And be ready to ditch it if necessary.

As far as I can tell from what I played a while ago, it's:
Dont use the shield, it's too unreliable. From yellows teleporting behind you and missiles trajectories fucking you in the ass, the shield is just too slow to rely on. It's only good on some niche situations like when you need to increase your rate of fire or you need to block a wisp thats on a different platform than yours.
The Shield Bash is only good for damaging enemies that are on a ledge bellow you, like child or imps. Aside from that it's too slow to be safe to use, dont try to jump from a rope and shield bash mobs either it doesnt go well.
For the early game you'll be relying on your V for the most part. It's enforcer's safest option, and since you dont have iframes you're gonna want to hang around ropes and jumppads a lot to hide while your V goes off cooldown.

Enforcer actually scales really well lategame, so it's only early game thats gonna give you a hard time.

I feel like one of the keys for Enforcer is to understand how to use his shield as effective as possible.
First of all, you need to know your enemies. Examples: a fire elite will fuck you on the first two maps, but later with a bit of attack-spe you will keep most of them at bay and the fire won't reach you. If a parent is close enough he can hit behind your shield even if he attacks in front of you and one-shot you. Most volatile elites will explode on your shield and won't damage you, however a spitter attack can pierce characters: the explosion in your shield will be blocked but you're against a wall or the spit hits on the ground that second explosion will kill you. And most great wisps aren't a problem, but the blue one can kill you if the bolts proc.

One of the things that many people don't know is that when you put the shield down there's a little delay (a frame or two) between the animation and the shield being active. I've died many times because a wisp shot me in that window just right after I put my shield on.
This is why attack speed is really important to Enforcer, not only for his basic, but to be able to put and (specially important) get out of the shield in a blink.
When you get enough attack-spe an important part of his game is reflect when to use the shield and when not.

Then there's the spots. First of all, ledges are the most safe thing, but putting the shield against a jumpad is an option too: most enemies can't reach from behind and you have access to an easy escape route.
What you never must do without the proper items is to be against a wall. Only do that when you have enough attack-spe to get out of shield fast (since they can kill you in the off-shield animation) and have a way to escape the mob (a pair of feathers). And even you're at the mercy of rockets.

Rockets; don't panic when you see one-two of them and get out of shield. If you got a few hooves you can move a few steps back and forth and avoid them easily.

The second thing about the spots is that not every map functions the same way. In the gup caves seems like the hitbox in the walls protrudes a little, so almost all funballs explode before your shield and I swear I can kill several gups with my shield against a wall and the rain of funballs won't hit me. However if I try to do that with the walls in the sunken temple, almost all of them will hit me, like the wall hitboxes are a bit behind me.
Also, even if you're on a ledge be careful when you explode a parent or a colossus under some kind of ceiling: the funballs tend to explode all at the same time in these situations, and you will not be able to take the ones that get pass the shield all at once.

And seriously, the bash becomes reliable with attack speed.

Don't spam the two "control" abilities. Unless you really need it, if you're in shield you should time the bash and the grenade so you use one when the other is at half its cooldown. Exceptions to this is for example if a stupid parent has gotten to close to you.

Now for the items. First of all, Enforcer's basic has something pretty great going: on-hit items like the knife or the behemoth will activate on all enemies it hits. This is not true for the Chef for example, who only procs in the first hit of his knives. An exception to this is the Sticky Bomb because even if it procs on all enemies the item only creates one bomb at a time.
Two items that are great for Enforcer but most people ignore: the mortar and the warbanner. I find the warbanner to be of great use if you get one on the first map, since he's the most static class. Nowadays I prefer to ditch that and get a hoove tho.

The mortar: first the range hits perfectly in the zone where Enforcer keeps enemies with his basic. Second, we're talking about an item that hits for 170% damage, and each new addition adds another 170% full damage to it.
Knife, gasoline and stungun are great of course.
One or two feathers is a blessing for when you need to get out of shield and there's a mob in front of you (and for some reason you can fall back, or you're against a wall). Prison shackles slows down all enemies, making easier to keep enemies in front of you.
Now, if you ever intend to get against a wall (and there's actually some great spots against wall, like the ones at the lava level) do never, ever get Icicles or Tesla: this items will kill flying enemies behind a wall and their funballs will explode instantly, killing you. I never get these two items.
Talking about that, the Enforcer has a rough time with flying shits, and getting a Chargefield Generator can help with that, a LOT.
The behemoth is probably the best Enforcer red: all enemies explode (unlike Chef, who only makes the first hit explode), and if you hit a mob, all them explosions created will hit most of them. Another one that I like is the Ice Cube, but that's mostly personal taste.
Do NOT get the scepter. It sounds great and looks cool, but the "push" effect will fuck you over because it will get enemies out of your range, and what you need at that point is to kill them fast with your attack-spe and "slowing" items.

Remember; use the grenade against wurms, it hits them hard.
Momentary use of shield only to fast-kill a few enemies is also a valid strategy.
When you're not in shield mode (which depending how you play will be 35-65% of time) remember to just use the classical "jump forward and shoot behind" kiting.
Have in mind that after looping everything gets so crazy that you'll find less situations where you can put the shield safely until all bosses are deal with and probably until the tp event has finished.

How do I host or play multiplayer?

I'm new (got it on the sale - only 8 hours logged) and wanted to give it a go. Punchy McPunchman (Loader) and Engineer are my favorites, but Commando ain't bad either.

Hosting requires IP opening, joining requires the lobby to be at the character select screen. If it isn't, you'll be unable to join. The game doesn't tell you if an IP is open or not, but you can tell by the behavior of the game. If it freezes, that means that IP isn't hosting/open. If it stays on the screen but you can still pause, then that means the lobby is either full or in game.

Be warned that /v/ tends to play with artifacts that greatly increase the difficulty, causing you to die within a single hit in many cases. Be prepared to die.

Because if you cant enter a server there's two possibilities:
1) If the screen freezes at the loading screen and you cant move your mouse -> Server doesnt exist or you inputted the IP/Port wrong.
2) If the screen is stuck at the loading screen and you can move your mouse -> Server exist and is either full or is already ingame

It's a 50/50 most of the time.
I like to share when I'm doing fine. When I have a good build going I tend to leave the crates for those who need it.
But nobody is going to blame you for aggressively take crates when you're low on items.
The only rude situation to happen is when you're "working" a zone a lots of crates appear, and you're saving them for when there's no enemies spawning only to have another guy to coming and take most of it.

Reds are so rare that they're mostly free but most people are to timid to take them first.
