No I can agree to that, the unfortunate thing is that mods like that are hard to keep track of and are easily accessible. The best thing a TO can do (at least for majors) in hopes of getting something like Hax's mod normalized and widespread enough to be the default is taking Wii's and Gamecubes before tournaments and overwriting the memcards before hand to make sure each install is good and "vanilla" according to the intended changes in the mod.

The potential legality issues of changes ppl can do using memory cards will be the main thing stopping it.

USF4 isnt played/organised now because capcom funded the game at pro level, and now they fund SFV instead, it being their latest product

so all the players who were worth watching in USF4 got sponsored, they became pros, now they have to follow the money and be as well practiced and skilled as possible at SFV. even the interesting players who never really made it as pros, like ISDD for example, have to follow the competition and where the spotlight for getting a sponsor is gonna be

the talent levels and diversity in smash 4 continues to grow but there have been less tournaments this year it feels like, certainly less tournies that you consider a "major" because of the quality of entrants

melee has been slow too. PPMD still isnt back. plup has had a slow year. mang0 had his usual one oustanding tourney and a load of average results. shroomed and axe are still holding back from picking a spacie. hbox is still recovering from going from an EVO champ to a top 8 finisher after his moving away thing. i think Geeky Goon Squad packed it in this year and they were a real pillar of EU melee.

there was a general acceptance in the smash community that everyone was gonna slow down a bit in 2017 after going so hard in 2016. wouldnt be shocked to see a pile of japs in smash 4 top 8 and at least one god eliminated by top 8 of melee

The problem with Melee is how high the entry barrier is. It's like you spend 20 hours learning how to do a tight bread and butter in most games, you spend 20 hours learning how to move in Smash.

Don't get me wrong, high level play is great and it's a blast to watch, but the entry barrier is so god damned high that there are basically no new entrants.

I think the problem is more breaking into that upper echelon of players. They are few and far between in Melee, and the ones that do aren't winning shit. As for Sm4sh it is just not as new as a year ago and the scene is noticably slowing down a bit. The only real hype comes from the japanese players coming over and the sunday spot but in general the scene has hit the normal stagnation and will probably slowly decline from here on out until the Switch port or Smash 5 comes out.

When it comes to Melee it's complicated I think and it has a lot to do with the state of the game right now. Whereas the meme of only 5 players winning everything was true a while ago it isnt as of today. Effectively only 2 maybe 3 people (Armada, Hbox, Mango(?)) are winning tournaments and 2 of them have boring playstyles. PPMD is gone, M2K cant win a major with Armada & Hbox there, Leffen has never really been 100% since his forced break and Plup will likely never make the breakthrough.

So you are basically watching a tournament where you know the winners finals beforehand with 90% certainty. On the offchance that one of them fucks up the other one basically gets a free pass to the finals. The only possible alternative is the 1/100 chance Mango actually shows up and wins but even then Armada has to play bad for it to happen. If Armada and Hbox both are at 100% it is certain that one of them wins. And to top it all off their games arent interesting to watch and people have seen them over and over again already.

Everyone below the Top 6 right now gets closer and closer but in the end all they are able to do is take games off of Mango/M2K/Leffen/Plup which means they only lower the chance of someone other than Armada/Hbox winning.

So in general the scene is stale, most of the interesting players and characters have hit a wall and all the top players are forced to move over to Fox becasue that is the only way to defeat Armada and Hbox. In pretty much every other matchup they will rape you with their floaties.

The game just seems to be figured out by now and no interesting or new tech has evolved for a while and the obvious conclusion is - Fox is the best character in the game by a fair margin and has no bad matchups. So basically everyone above a certain level develops a pocket-Fox and the interest to push other characters is fading. As a result Falco is slowly becoming irrelevant and a lot of other characters will follow suit.

Real talk though, how the fuck did Smash 4 managed to fuck up this badly? it got Sunday finals (like they've been asking for the last 2 years) and they barely got more entrants than Melee (Saturday). To be fair the Splatoon players had already played the previous game a lot while the Arms players had just picked it up and were awful at it. It really felt like the guy who won first place was the only one with any previous experience with the game at all. I thought the Japanese tournament a little while ago was fun.
