The Cera scene was genuinely bad but i think its intentionally bad.

A lot of this season is either super cheap on budget and lack of creative direction or Lynch genuinely wants parts of the show to look like a low budget scifi original movie from a decade ago in terms of effects and acting.

These weren't so much 'amnesia' as they were 'repressed memories'. Amnesia is usually caused by some outer trigger, like being hit on the head or drugged. And you forget nearly everything of your life.

James and Alex, deep down, know what they did. But what they did fucked them up so badly, that they are trying to regress and pretend it never happened.

It makes more sense with James. "I didn't kill her. She was going to die anyway. She died from her sickness. I didn't kill her. It wasn't me." He denied until he believed.

Alex is supposed to be more... mental patient-y. He believes he's still trying to save his brother from his fate, when it is already too late.
