The pace getting into and out of the hacking screen is pretty fast, so if you can enjoy the shoot em up minigame, don't feel like it'll be a nuisance. Just finished route A, had no idea the ending was about to happen, the pacing was bad. I'm assuming I'll feel more fulfilled when I get 9S's story. Loved Nier, actually cried in some parts, specially with the end, but I felt nothing for automata's route A ending.

This and Bloodborne will most likely go down as my favourite games of this gen. As a fan of the first NieR I was really happy with how Automata turned out.

You won't feel anything for A until you have finished A through to E. The routes are linear and they aren't really endings so much as chapter bookmarks.
It's probably worth giving A another run after all of that though so that all of the little details you missed hit you nice and hard.

Devs said Nier:Automata is standalone and it's mostly true.
Of course there are some references, even recurring characters so playing Nier / DoD1 before can make the experience better but it's not required for understanding the story.

Some references will fly entirely over your head, an entire character and a few sidequests will lack all meaning to you if you haven't played Nier. You won't fully understand why the world is the way it is, even after you've finished the game, but that might make some twists more surprising. As long as you understand that the game takes place thousands of years after at least two species-ending apocalypses that can't each be summed up in a few sentences (and in fact, will not be summed up in Automata at all), then go ahead.
