I started BG2, felt confused as hell, and then decided to play the original first and am having a lot more fun. Only annoying thing so far is the enemy respawn rate, i had my Monk scouting the Knoll stronghold, he would run past an area, and then I would move the rest of my party to him and suddenly there would be enemies in the way.

Do Monks ever actually get that strong in BG? Monks in most DnD games seem to just be shitty fighters with a bunch of movement bullshit that is almost never useful because the DM gets mad if you jump over his puzzles.

They certainly do. They have a wide variety of useful skills at their disposal. Quivering Palm, for example, can outright kill anything that fails its saving throw. The become immune to poison, slow, charms, gain magic resist, can hide and detect traps, can use scrolls and wands. Basically they gain fucktons of useful skills that make them absolute powerhouses.
