I don't know that I like a particular window dressing, but I like level design with a lot of verticality and mixing between large, open spaces and/or landmarks as well as smaller, intricate passageways and architecture. Unfortunately I don't think there's really any game like this. Some 2000s era PeeCee games were vaguely headed in this direction but that time has passed apparently.

Abandoned apartments, shopping areas, and other places where a lot of people were in the past. Stuff like Olympus Heights and Fort Frolic in Bioshock, some of the neon-lit parts of Tokyo in SMTIV, and the various stores/clubs in System Shock 2 were all fun to explore. Something about picking through the remains of lived in areas, seeing how people went about their life and what happened to that life after disaster, is incredibly interesting to me. That's why I love apocalyptic games so much, because everywhere you explore you get to find small remains and hints of who lived there and what happened to them.

I also really love to see just plain reality in video games alongside fantastical/science fiction elements. Games like Persona, Deus Ex, and Vampire: The Masquerade all have worlds that generally stick to real settings but pair it with fantastical elements. There's something about the normalcy of reality paired with fantasy elements that helps to really solidify the contrast between the two.

I love every setting in horror games where things are peacefully and normal right before shit is about to hit the fan

Like the Silent Hill 4 apartment right b4 you crawl back into the holes and get chased by undefeatable ghosts

Or in Soma where you wake up in your flat and ride in sub, right b4 your mind gets sent into post apocalyptic earth way under the sea

Even Deadspace has some small parts with mals and such, b4 everything gets infested and turns to shreds

But I need more of these games
Guess I only feel save in the eye of a tornado

The new Prey is good at that. The entire start to the game is fantastic and really nails that exact feeling you're talking about. It's not really scary or anything, but certainly has that feeling of realizing how fucked everything is.
>>
>>382387662
But see, there are games with budgets and manpower to make these things happen, they just choose to use their resources to make generic modern cities or open grassy fields.

I dont know why vidya dont go more off the rails with their world designs, if we wanted to emulate real life, we have the real world.

I love settings where it seems like it's in the past, but the game slowly reveals over the course of the series/game that it's in the future, the world already "ended" once, and society had regrown and forgotten the old world.
E.g. Shining Force, 7th Dragon (mostly 3), EO.

It also produces a lot of settings like your pic, which I love.

>I love settings where it seems like it's in the past, but the game slowly reveals over the course of the series/game that it's in the future, the world already "ended" once, and society had regrown
>Shining Force

I've only played EXA but I was sure all the games were straight fantasy with some occasional ancient technology shit.
>>
>>382404398
Heroes of annihilated empires sets this up but then does nothing with it, then the devs died and we'll never get a sequel that explores it

This is actually a really cool setting. As much as Uncharted is just a cinematic, set piece, over the shoulder, cover based shooter, its got some redeeming merits
>>
>>382404704
In the first Shining Force, it begins as a fantasy narrative with Goblins, Dwarves, etc. and over the course of the game it becomes clear that the divine ancients were in reality a highly advanced race that sacrificed themselves to defeat a massive marine leviathan.
>>
>>382405238
It's actually a fantasy world RTS.
Eventually On one of the missions, you come across the ruins of a tank just playing the and it's not commented on at all. Throughout the game you catch little glimpses of this. As the game concludes there's a cinematic that teases a whole world outside their confines of the game world, where technology has progressed to at least the modern day.

The devs were setting up the sequel, and then they died. Really great game too. I think it's on sale for like 2 bucks. Plenty of flaws, but loads of fun and the weird sprite units mixed with 3d to allow for massive armies gives it a unique aesthetic that's kind of comfy

Really sad it's dead

Animation and world design in Uncharted deserve recognition

Hate the game though

I can't be the only one here to actually like sewer levels, right?
>>
>>382383256
probably because it's the hardest, most time consuming setting to make.
>>
>>382405176
I once had a nightmare where I was trapped on a ship graveyard, that was far denser than pic related, out in the middle of the ocean. It was stacked from the seafloor with still floating wrecks drifting in a tangle around it. I had to climb down through the chaos to the lowest levels underwater to rescue my sister, avoiding mutant sea life, potential collapses and expanses of flooded compartments on the way.
I've always wanted a full game set in one since.

Not him but the entire Rise of Zilart, and Chains of Promathia expansions for FFXI are about the Zilart an extinct race that built lots of the eerie structures around vana'diel.

Hard to get into an old MMO now, but the private servers with XP boost do a pretty good job of letting you play the story,

I know, and that would be fucking excellent, it's a perfect fit for the dark fantasy/horror they do in dark souls and bloodborne.

Most gods in aztec mythology are pretty much just already souls bosses.
