If you think a movie only making double it's budget back makes it a success, you are clueless. After advertisement money the return for the investors was pathetic. Pacific Rim was considered a failure by the studio and that was widely reported at the time. That's why the sequel never happened until Legendary became desperate to get a Marvelesque franchise on the go. Hence the Kong movie and such. They want them all to cross over. Their own Avengers. And even so they are giving what should be a major movie to a TV director as a first feature. PR2 is going to be even more garbage than the first film but they need to keep the IP alive for the franchise.
