While not exactly wrong. That is where the majoirty of the games actual difficulty comes from. since yeah shit was made so just beating the levels would be easy as all fuck for ,like which you said, the sake of the shit skilled kiddos.

I still think it is better to have optional "challenge stages" than have you collect shit and check every nook and cranny for them. When you realize this is bad game design you would not have Yoshi's Island so high up your list of good games.
Music is great though. And like I said, it is good for kids. Anybody else, it can be done with in a couple of days, if even that.
Super Mario Bros 1, 2 and 3 for a good example of games that provides good challenge while keeping it optional.
