Wind Waker is my favourite Zelda game, or at least joint favourite, but man it's soundtrack just doesn't do anything for me when compared to games like Skyward Sword, (which ironically, I fucking hate)

I think WW's OST is better when it aims for a specific VIBE, rather than try and do something epic and orchestral. Because without a real orchestra, the "epic quest" vibe just fails. That's why Twilight Princess's OST sucked ass to me as well. It tried to be this big, LOTR style epic fanfare all the time and it made me cringe.

The older games can pull it off because you expect them to have a restricted soundfont, but hearing a huge, million dollar IP on a relatively strong console of the time use saturday morning cartoon-tier instruments is just depressing. Anyways, rant over.

Very obviously Majora's Mask. Among the many other things it does best.

For nostalgia's sake, I go with Link's Awakening, as it was my first Zelda and left quite an impact on me.

I'd probably say Ocarina of Time otherwise, in sheer quality, variety, and use of music.

The music was like the only thing Twilight Princess nailed. I'm not sure if it's the best of the series, but it's pretty gud

Ocarina is nothing but instant classic melody after instant classic melody. I don't give a fuck what you think is better music on its own. It's a soundtrack accompanying a video game, and the music in Ocarina is sewn into its DNA like no other Zelda. Wind Waker's title theme is the only song since Ocarina that felt like an intrinsic part of the whole experience.

I've never played any Zelda. Thinking of buying a Switch for BoTW, but also an N64. Was thinking of going OoT, then MM. It feels like OoT is a good tutorial for MM. Correct?

Also, is WW worth it? I got it once as a kid but it pissed me off and I didn't know what to do like a retard and gave up on it.

Like...dude, no.
Also, the N64 Zelda games run at 20fps (on the n64) but the remakes are just...not the same. The atmosphere is different. It will take a while to get used to the 20fps cap but it is worth it.
I never really liked wind waker but i can see why people like it. It's not even because of the usual criticism it receives in here and everywhere else (sailing taking too long, triforce chart hunting) it's just, the game engine, the movement, the weight behind every attack,it never clicked with me. The game i also incredibly easy to the point that you feel some times insulted.
An advice, if you're going to start with the 3D zelda games, don't play BotW first. It's really something different almost entirely. Start with OoT, and, give it 5-6 hours until it gets good. Aka until you do the first 3 dungeons. If you like it from the start,you're gonna love it after. It really deserves all the praise it gets. If i were to score the 3D zelda games, it would go like this:
OoT: 9/10
MajorasMask: 9.5/10
Wind waker: 7.5/10
Twilight pruncess: 8/10
Skyward sword: 4/10
BotW: 9.5/10

Well, I meant does OoT set you up for 3D Zelda better since MM is timed? I tried playing MM, but the timer threw me off even though I enjoyed the game. Was worried the learning curve would kill me, especially since I'm timed.

I don't know. I personally never had a problem with the time mechanic in MM, not even when i was a kid. It kinda needs a bit to get into it yes, i can see that, but once you're in, it will absorb you.
Did you play the Song of time in reverse? It makes the time go by a lot slower.

Yes, absolutely go play OoT then MM, as that was always the intention, its the ideal way to start with Zelda. MM will shove a bunch of mechanics at you that it assumes you earned while playing OoT and it's very much a squeal designed with that in mind.

I absolutely consider OoT the better, and more subtle, game overall though. MM is really clever at what it does, but it's obvious that it was hacked together very quickly out of assets from the previous game as opposed to having everything tailor made for it. This is actually part of why I feel that, despite the quality of OoT's remake being up in the air, that MM's remake is actually the far better experience for substantial reasons.

That and the Outset Island village theme are amazing. Seriously, the latter has to be the single best village music in the series. It feels so genuinely happy, but somehow completely avoids being saccharine through its wistfulness.

Can you give some unexpected examples? Skyward sword's soundtrack made me pretty flacid with some big exceptions of course like the main theme and Demise's theme. All the boss themes just came across as generic ochestra for me

Not underrated but definitely fantastic. Zelda games can only wish they had music like this these days.

Every game had some great tracks, but it's hard to weigh them against each other as full games. Tal Tal Heights is probably my favorite theme overall, and it saddens me that every attempt at a remix has only made it worse. Molgera is easily my favorite boss theme.
I think Twilight Princess is the only game where I didn't find the music all that memorable, besides perhaps Ganon's beast form. BotW obviously scores lowest overall, but there was some decent tracks in there.
