Not really. Some games have interesting visuals and story, but are so boring and easy that achievements save it from being not worth continuing.

Their popularity blows my mind. I was recently talking to a friend about the Starcraft remaster and he was asking if they would include achievement and I told him that they probably won't and I could instantly see in his face that his entire interest for the game was gone.

How so? Some are pretty pointless and grindy but if the game has a good balance of progression and "do this cool thing that you wouldn't do normally" achievements then it's an improvement to the game.
I honestly can't think of a reason why they would be bad, you can just ignore them if you want.

That's ocd but there are games I wish had more achievements so I have something else to do. Like I would never think to play spelunky without picking up gold. It was quite challenging and fun.

I've started a 100% cheevo account on 360 as a little side project back in February.

Did 5 games so far, offline single player games only.

I mostly treat cheevos as suggestions. If there's one that looks like it'd be interesting, I'll go for it. If it's a game I love, I'll be more inclined to go for more cheevos, but there's still usually a line if they seem particularly tedious or not fun.

Funny how times change, things equivalent to achievements in the past had nothing to do with gamer cred but unlocking game modes, weapons, costumes, areas, cheats, etc.
Now it's often split in half, you do useless achievements for no reward other than, "You are such a pro gamer bro, high five! Now everyone can see how pro you are!" and all the extra shit they used to have in games are now preorder bonuses or dlc.
