What does /v/ think of the N64 controller?

Second worst controller ever. The only one that's worse is the OG Xbox controller.

N64 is worst due to the genral design and the analog stick failing.

i want to saw off that leftmost handle
it gets in the way and makes me have to hold the joystick in an uncomfortable way

It is comfortable considering that you're basically holding a nunchuck with your left hand. The Z trigger below that handle is also satisfying and has a nice feel to it. 1/3rd of the controller's size is useless but they couldn't have predicted that the Joystick would become the Norm so they played it safe.
The joystick is an barely acceptable first try, sadly. The dualschock did a much better job at providing joysticks, 2 years later.
Overall it's a solid 5/10. It did its job.

How the fuck are you even meant to use it? If you hold it normally, it's impossible to use the analogue stick.

Not a great controller. But the choice to make analog stick mandatory + having 4 buttons ablet to intuitively be dedicated to left/right/up/down camera, was amazing for its time.

PS1 and it's Snes-like controller + a couple of extra shoulder buttons for left/right camera turned out to be the wrong choice for 3D

If the Gamecube controller had been introduced in the N64's lifetime, that would have been the best controller for that respective console ever

I like it. The shape, I forgive because of how new 3D gaming was. The analog stick doesn't hold up to abuse, though.

My one major complaint about it is that it has all those face buttons, but no X and Y.

The design was meh overall but the Z button was the most satisfying button of all time.

Abomination only defended by drones, as a child I was hoping Nintendo made a controller more akin to Dualshock so playing SM64 was comfier

It's two controllers in one which makes it unwieldy, but it's far from the worst controller ever since the Atari Jaguar, Colecovision, and gallery of CD-I controllers exist. Even going back to play games now it's comfortable to use either with the analog or d-pad grips. In the end, the N64 controller is okay.

i remember seeing an ad for it in a magazine and the kids where sitting at a table holding the tiny analog sticks like an arcade stick. there were people in the 90s that didn't know how the fuck to hold it too

The shape did nothing wrong. The stick however, is literally everything wrong with the controller. I can't play any of my n64 games anymore because all the sticks are wobbly now.

As far as handling goes it isnt nearly as bad as people say it is. However the joystick is fucking shit. And the overall build quality sucked on it. Had to replace both of my controllers since they just fell apart.
