I tried to play SMT4 and was having a blast but that Tokyo map is atrocious, had to quit after that. At the same time i tried to play P4 but I was getting way too much boring plot stuff i didn't care about before even getting to a dungeon, so i wuit that too. I have beaten and mostly enjoyed P5, though i really didn't like that last arc.

Raidou 1 is an interesting game if not a very good one.
Raidou 2 makes the combat tolerable but skimps on production value and story/charm. I'd say it's a worse game overall.

Really, none of the Devil Summoner games are more than 6/10. Mainline is much better.

I want another Strange Journey for that reason. SMT has amazing combat IMO and an interesting demon/fusion system. That is a constant, all the other shit around that changes between games. I am pretty sure the reason why SMT run short on game in the end and Persona gain popularity was of the publisher Atlus.

Don't get me wrong, I think Atlus is a better company and the average of triple A publisher out there.

They were short on money, moved SMT to handheld and rebooted the Persona franchise for a bigger audience, which ultimatively was a success. But obviously SMT fans suffered from it.

Grimrock is top-tier my nigga. Great atmosphere, symmetrical combat that forces you to be aware of you surroundings and good reflexes.

Etrian is good for it's mobile FOE's that force you to think strategically about how to move and self-map around the dungeon but the gameplay is too obtuse and grindy I'll admit.

Strange journey is very meh and a lot of times the dungeons are just Lionel levels of messy. If anything, Soul Hackers is probably the most decent crawler.

Persona really didn't start to become hugely popular until P4. P3 was a minor success for its time. The fact that both games were made for PS2, despite being released while the PS3 was in full swing, speaks volumes.

But you can isolate a lot of decisions that certainly made the franchise popular, more so than every other SMT counterpart.
