What I never understand, and what they never explain, is who are the residents then?

Were they kidnapped just like the scientists? Are they just extremely good well-paid actors? You meet a few construction workers and the game makes it clear at least one of them doesn't realize "he's in the future".

How do you know the story's not going to be even more insane than the last couple of games?
I don't really mind one way or the other, but I am worried that the puzzles will be either repetitive or not as good since the original puzzle creator died.

Fuck the Layton purists for lambasting this game. It has a sequel hook and everything and all because it competed in the market Layton fanbase went nuclear and gave it bad reviews en masse. Worst part is the guy who made it was the silent hill producer, and he absolutely loved Layton.

No, and that's what makes that plot twist so stupid and just character ruining.

Azran's Legacy' ending part overall felt really disappointing compared to the other Layton games. They literally used the plot twist that Spectre will use a couple of years later, only making it for kids in a sense that noone fucking dies, thus creating more continuity problems with the original timeline.
I hope Katrielle's games will fix some of this stuff, but somehow, i fear that they'll make things even worse.
