The best course of action would be a small barebones brick with USB-C, HDMI and a small backup battery that keeps it in standby when not connected to anything. That way you can still bring it to LANs and plug it into docks already present there.

When Monster Hunter was an exclusive title I considered getting one for it and Xenoblade but now the Switch is completely uninteresting to me.

On that thought, I wish they would do a dock bundle and sell 2-3 docks together for a discounted price. Half the reason to have multiple docks is to be able to play on multiple TV's in one home, or across multiple homes, without unplugging anything except the handheld console.
