It's strongly implied that MC mission is the first time 2B met him, she didn't even understand why she had thoughts about his smile or how he admired her after she was forced to kill him. I'm in the middle of 9S playthrough so maybe it'll change but so far pic related is kinda fitting this game.
This said I do still play it because I do enjoy the atmosphere and bits of (nonsensical) lore. Somehow I find it soothing after work, so even with its flaws money well spent.
