Yeah, it's worth it especially if you liked the first Nier. Automata is better or at least as good in pretty much every way. Graphics are quite shit though the character animations and models are great and the game had some technical issues on release and the devs released no patches for the first few months, no idea what's been fixed and what has not since then. There was a mod which fixed/improved a lot of things however.

Yes and no. The main story is stand alone, but there is a ton that will fly over your head. Even cosmetic stuff like a remix of an iconic song from the first game that played during a set piece scene starts playing during a scene that mirrors it. And really, the first game is stellar; I know platinum did the gameplay for the game but its a Nier game not a platinum game, it plays like the original just more polished.

2B deliberately hides her emotions from 9S, while that doesn't really excuse her from being one dimensional most of the time, it helps to recognize that she's desperately in love but pushing him away because she's only ever going to get hurt, because that's her job.
9S is all over the place, but playing his side missions in C explains him a lot better.
A lot of the character growth/detail is hidden in side missions.

A2 is the prettiest and I find her personality attractive. She didn't have enough screen time to make her very deep but I definitely like what I've seen of her so far.

Even without side materials there's a shitload of hints about what goes on between 2B and 9S.
Like in Wandering Couple there's a moment when girl is forced to reformat her lover and he says that he knows that he will still fall in love with her even if his memory is wiped, reflecting what 2B/9S went through for all these years.
Or multiple side quests about androids losing their lovers and going nuclear form realisation that they are alone and world is now meaningless.

Yeah I'm probably a minority but I agree, enemy variety is just shit. The combat is a cluttered mess because of 9S and the two pods while in reality the combat is really basic. Also the death system is pretty bad, they wanted to copy dark souls, but the game doesn't really fit that style. As a result I ended up putting on auto heal items making the game way too easy because I didn't want to risk losing everything. It was especially disappointing when I played Bayonetta for the first time the day after finishing Nier and realized how much better Platinum can do. Nier is a boring slog in comparison to Bayonetta and MGR.
