Anthopomorphic animals are the most lazy of all kinds of characters in terms of design. Making human characters that are unique, interesting, and stand out from the crowd is far more difficult than making some yiffbait furfaggots cream their pants over any day, largely because furfaggots have no standards. I think it probably has to do with how much more expensive visuals are to do these days along with popular conventions and mechanics. So where as before you had a human with a single outfit for the whole game and some kind of 6 legged dog-man that swings a sword with its tail and wears a leather vest. To do that now you'd need to make those same two guys in much more detail, models, especially non humanoid models are apparently expensive as shit. You'd also likely need to make armor (that now visually changes based on equipment) fit both the dude and the dog thing, which adds even more time and money per armor piece, etc. Just a lot more time and money where as they could just do "human" and "Grey Human" and "Blueish Human with long ears" and "Human but this time with a tail that clips through every piece of armor for reasons mentioned before"

Which to me suggested that anthro characters are lacking in creativity and nothing less than significantly more outlandish designs actually qualify as creative. My counterargument is that going too far down the deep end of abstract design distances them from being relatable to the player, which is why that level of abstract design might not work well in video games.

Let me put this to you.
People dislike Freya because she isn't human, this is obvious.
I'd like her if she was or wasn't, regardless of her race she has a lot going for her:

A very useful and flexible party member who is one of the easiest to become overpowered and start doing 9999 damage.

A good design if you realize her outfit is supposed to be a mixup of a knights armor and a raincoat (It always rains in Burmecia)

A really good (albeit unfortunately short) story arc that plays a big role alongside the main story.

Said story is quite gruesome and harrowing but again people think little of it just because the victims are not human.

Freya herself is down to earth, proud and confident but isn't afraid to joke with Zidane or be protective of others.
She isnt your childhood friend/sweetheart, your typical genki girl but a warrior, strong and reliable who isn't sexualized.

Her arc involving Fratley was poorly done overall but the writing in IX left a lot of things half baked however it was a decent motivation for her, in fact it's an amazing trait (and character flaw) that she is driven to spend years searching and fighting for a loved one and cannot let it go, even if it brings her misery and despair.

The only reason people ignore/hate Freya is that she isn't human, id argue that if she was, she'd easily be top tier for most people and one of the best female characters Square/Square-Enix have done.

this is my fetish. there is such a drought of good worldbuilding in ""furry"" settings. zootopia was a step in the right direction, but it was a story first, a world second.
What I'd like is: Talking animals. Where do we go from here?
What would their societies be like? What would their lives be like? How will they use tools? How will they go through the motions of brone age-> iron age->medeival age and so on?
Imagine your neighbor's pitbul in an apron, standing by an anvil at a forge. How do they shape metal, do they still just hit it with a hammer, or do they need to set up a huge pulley system to drop a stone each time hit it hard enough?
What about their language? Since they could only hold weapons in their mouth, if not just strapping them to their body, I imagined a system where most basic ideas can be expressed with certain phonemes, and conjugated with another group, so that with an empty mouth,one would be capable of saying "good morning, how do you do", but while holding a weapon, they could still speak clearly in a "ME KILL ARCHER ; YOU DISTRACT INFANTRY" in a sort of military dialect.

One huge issue I had with Zootopia and every other diverse animal society by proxy is how do you deal with immensely different living expenses. If rodents are as clever as dogs and polar bears, then every single job that doesn't involve heavy lifting or staffing counters will be done by rodents, because you can pay them a pittance. If you subsidize costs for large animals to level out the playing field, where's the money for that coming from? I don't think Mr. Cheese is going to agree to a 99% income tax so Mr. Salmon can have a desk job. You'd need a society that religiously adheres to enlightened ideals to make something like that work, and such a society would be so far removed from what we humans tend to live in that you'd have trouble telling relatable stories with it.

Been awhile but in BoFIII you find a mural deoicting the events of BoFI and get sime history. I remember it being implied from there that the Ryu and Nina got together. For BoFIII that one seems the most likely, it feels like a clear romance there.
