After the E3 presentations I got so excited I replayed Zero Mission, twice.
In all honesty, I think it's the second best Metroid game. I love Super and I love Prime, but in terms of fast paced action, non-linear progression, music and visuals it absolutely nails everything a Metroid game should be. There are some unfortunate design choices like locking you away from certain areas for seemingly no reason. There's one example the moment you enter Norfair and head to the right. You're supposed to have the Power Grip to even get over the lava pit, but you can bomb jump up there with some finesse and you're greeted by a really weirdly placed organic barrier, one of those blue/orange things the bugs can destroy except there are no bugs.
It's just there and makes no sense. I hate to use such an obvious word, but it really breaks the immersion. It's an in-your-face moment. If I can get up there early, I should be able to get the rewards as long as I can survive through the obstacles.
Either way, Zero Mission is really fucking fun. Can't believe there was a time where I preferred Fusion over it.

I loved that about Prime 2. The dark world was so fucking oppressive. Everything suddenly got scary and I like that they matched the dark visuals and scary ambience with actual in-game threats. It was neat and it made getting the Light Suit feel so fucking good.
The only thing I didn't like was having to wait around the light beacons for health. But, it could be remedied by killing some of those stationary plant things. Still, if I were to redesign Prime 2, I probably would have made the beacons replenish health somewhat faster. Not enough to break the Amorbis fight, but enough to let you traverse the areas faster.

Oh, also knowledge. They only knew that the Metroids had a cold weakness because of Samus. That was the truly horrible thing about the X, the collective knowledge they gained from absorbing a host. I usually hate FPS on controllers but MP is a first person adventure game and shooter second, combat is more about manuvering not precise shooting. Aiming skill means very little if it bothers you that much emulate it with mouse and keyboard injection.

Start with Super. Always Super. Then, move on to Zero Mission and Prime. Depending on which one you liked, either go for Prime 2 or Fusion.
Storyline is not important, since every game is disconnected from the others, but can be enjoyabled to follow. Fusion is pretty much the most story-heavy game of them all. The rest put story way, way in the background.
The way the Prime games handle story(at least 1 and 2) is to give a very, very basic plot which involves Samus going on some adventure, then having the rest of the story told through in-game scans you have to find yourself. It's fully optional for those who want to indulge in some lore.

Prime took a cue from OoT and made combat more about strafing back and forth and using the right item, rather than having it focus on complex inputs. It's kind of weird when you think about how deep Super Metroid could get when you really delve into it.
I like it though. Prime combat is really simple, but satisfying and the enemy design work well with it. I'm glad they went with a more adventure heavy game, because Super was already an amazing action-heavy one.
