I got Ninja Gaiden 2 on my 10th birthday.

For an odd reason, sexual content is off with them.
Otherwise I got to play The Punisher just fine.

my mother used to buy me 18+ and M games because she thought the age is about the difficulty and thinking ability, and i was a bit of a genius for a kid getting perfect scores and straight A+s for years in a row.

I had a short, frank discussion with my dad about it when he bought me Resident Evil 4.

He just watched a bit of the game with me, and decided that I was mature enough to handle it and as long as I didn't play it in front of my little sister, it was okay.

My parents didn't really care.
They figured M games would still be fun. If not more fun.

I mean fuck, they're just games, and we were kids.
Any sex references were completely lost on us, and most violence in the n64/ps2 gen were comical at best.

My parents were pretty relaxed about ratings for games. GTA and Leisure Suit Larry were the only games they didn't really want me to play. Shit was pretty alright.

I had seen more violence in movies so it was alright.

My parents didn't give a shit. They knew I was a well adjusted kid with friends and a social life outside that also did well in school. I remember they got me Soldier of Fortune when I got good grades and my dad watched me blow up someone's stomach open with the entrails coming out.

Good fucking game. Maybe it was an American thing. I live in yuropoor and my parents aren't religious so I had a pretty chill life.

Well when I was much younger I wanted to play the aliens vs predator games because I was really into the setting at the time but my dad said I could only play it if I played as humans. He didn't like the idea of me playing as a merciless predator or alien I guess but I honored his request until I got a bit older.

I was in a Star Wars craze and though the gun was the player and I was some kind of R2D2 before my dad explained that I was the guy in the little box below and then it all made sense. Mom hated any game with violence, dad couldn't give a Fuck. Had to start with games where you could kill only aliens and no humans like ratchet and clank when I was 8 then I was allowed to play stuff like Kotor at 10 and by 12 they would allow me to play GTA all I wanted. They thought I was going to turn out violent becuase of video games but my older brother who barely ever plays video games turned out to be more aggressive than me. Mom started to believe that video games were a coping mechanism and calmed me down. She was more hectic about anything that looks even remotely demonic. She never let me play resident evil becuase it had evil in it. neighbors daughter moves out, neighbor emptying their room, neighbor knows I like video games so hands me a copy of planscape torment, mom makes me hand it back when she sees the cover I could have improved my taste in vidya exponentially at an early age.

My parents didn't really care. My aunt always tried to take a commensurate role in my hobbies but she always got moved to the wayside because my mom felt she had say over what I could and couldn't enjoy. I was a good kid and mostly didn't encourage any sort of violent behavior, she told me to stop doing normal stuff like pretend gun fights with my cousin or brothers.

As for the actual games, my mom straight up bought me M rated games most of the time. She knew I would ask her for video games, and I couldn't get a lot of them without an adult, but because my grades were so good I guess she didn't see the problem, and I was already terrified of games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, so I didn't bother to ask for those. I just asked for games like House of the Dead 2 and cheap survival horror games on the Dreamcast. When I got older than that, she started buying video games less and less and I was renting a lot more. I could rent M rated games with my aunt because my cousin wanted them more than I did, but it was like watching porn when you've skipped school: it doesn't feel as good if it isn't taboo.

My mom up until 7th or 8th grade was a real harsh on these things, only letting me play up to T games, but once I hit highschool she stopped caring and let me buy whatever I want. I think the only time she ever raised her eyebrows was when she walked in on me summoning Mara in Persona 3.

I was playing Mortal Kombat 2 when I was 4 so they didn't care about violence, it was more sexual content and nudity that they were bothered by. I pretty much had to tell them what was in thr game and how "adult" it was since they knew that I looked into games a ton and they trusted me quite a bit. So I should a demo of it to my dad and he said: "I don't see how this is different from those Resident Evil games you play." Then I was allowed to.
