He might have gotten by on offensive defense, conserving nanopaste or obsessive ninjarunning on lower difficulties, though that would be unusual.

Honestly it took me two (technically three tries because of the goddamn QTE at the end) to take him down when I first played. I felt like there was some kind of timing or gameplan I wasn't getting the right idea for and was having to just man-mode my way through his health-bar.

Unless there's some kind of trick to when and how you're supposed to parry even doing it right feels sloppy.

I didn't work out how to parry multiple attacks in a row until Sam in the desert, I got past monsoon with a whole lot of healing and emp grenades which shut him down when he does the weird tornado thing.

here's the thing about parrying: if you're using a controller (i hope to fuck you are), it's just tapping the stick towards monsoon and hitting the attack button. just do it over and over.

you can literally just spam it and it'll work. most will probably be blocks but he's ez if you just do that

Not gonna lie, you kinda missed out. Definitely give it another go at hard at least. I was mostly pulling Bs and Cs through the chapters, but damn it was a ride. MGR is honestly super forgiving and all you have to lose is score and pride.

usually in MGS games you can use the codec during a boss fight to get tips like that from your allies

I think they did the same thing in MGR, tho you don't need it most of the time
