pretty much, also the 'true ending' is pretty ass.

combat never really evolves and becomes repetitive. Since game is pretty long this becomes pretty apparent before youve even seen a lot of the content.
the mapping system
limited color palette makes areas feel very samey
most badges you find are pretty lame and kind of reduces the value of exploration once you find the decent ones.
tries too hard to be cutedark

My only complaint about the artstyle is people say it's better and more driverse than Ori which is outright horseshit. Honestly on /v/ Hollow Knight's biggest enemy is its fans.
>>
>>382303879
I haven't even played Ori so I won't comment on that, but while I admire HK for any aspects I won't overplay it. I just enjoy it for what it is and don't understand why people, fans and haters alike, get so autistic over it.

>combat never really evolves and becomes repetitive.
The entirety of Castlevania's combat is grind until you can kill a boss in 3 shot and one shot everything else.

HK was basically Megaman X combat in a Metroidvania game, which is what make it the best game in the genre.

HK combat is fast paced and fluid, doesn't let you cheese the game with grinding. Even with your end game sword you still get butt rape by True end boss if you just go in swinging.

Healing is another nice touch since it's not instantaneous and it's not free.

The game rely entirely on skill, not strong weapon, not stat, not stockpiling 999 healing potion in your inventory which you can eat while pausing the game.
>>
>>382302045
Don't you talk shit on my favorite area. First of all its optional, and secondly coupled with trial of fools there are two challenges to test your mastery movement and platforming and of combat.

It's just overly simplistic which has led to the homogenization of animation in the recent past. But that's never the medium's fault, people gobble it up and praise two black dots for eyes on a white blank mask because people like simple shit. It's just the way of life.

It's simple design-wise but that doesn't mean it's not detailed art-wise. Besides, who said all art needs to be hyperrealistic?
>>
When you enter an area, even if you only enter and leave right way, it adds everything to your map.

Too many vertical shit, when you're backtracking you need to keep jumping multiple platforms to get somewhere even if it's just a straight line on the same.

Combat is shit, nails arts are shit too, both mostly because of the stupid knock back on hit, no new weapons.
>but you can use a charm to remove that

Charms are shit forcing you to use a slot on things that should be there by default like seeing where you are on the map and no knock back on hit and things that would be better separate like the modifications on the spells allowing for a better customization.

That's all i can remember.

White Palace, while fun, was some out of place shit that really shouldn't have been part of the main story and more of a side-mission deal.
Backtracking was horrible after the infection spread as it blocked certain paths FOR NO FUCKING REASON.
Bugs that ruined my experience somewhat as I couldn't get the arena rewards and 100% it.
Dreamers weren't bosses.
I think they patched some things out between versions as in my game I could enter certain areas by cheesing background objects and not needing an upgrade but the same objects weren't in my friend's game when I was observing him on steam.
Some things felt like they had no purpose, like the spider place. (I know that's for Hornet but I found out later after exploring the entire place like an autist.)
A lot of NPC's that seemed cool were only there for LORE.

Not any severe complaints but I would've loved if it had more content and it did more stuff with its NPC's. Lots of the fights were cool, fun, and a case of GIT GUD. Nothing really made me go "THAT'S BULLSHIT" and the gladiator area was pretty fun, especially the part where you can't touch the floor. I guess getting stuff for the true ending was annoying as well but that's true endings in general.
>>
>>382306932
mushroom ending literally is a chore though. just watch the cutscene on youtube it's not worth doing it
>>
>>382307471
Isn't White Palace completely optional
>>
>>382304693
It's only repetitive if you stuck to one fighting style. There were a few major ways to doing things. I personally went in with rapid attacks while my friend focused on charging attacks. There's one defensive build for shitters and another that uses soul attacks. Between the length of the game and learning how to fight monsters there's not really much time for things to get repetitive if you learn at least one other fighting style later on. Think it was around 20 hrs where I could kill everything without completely fucking up, bosses aside, but I never switched styles.
>>382307689
Technically. You can get bad and neutral ending with it but not the true ending. I meant it more as in it not being part of the story since it really felt like it clashed with the general look and feel of the game as a whole. I mean it wasn't really hard, just trial and error. Would've liked something that was actually difficult and had a desperate king feel to it instead of feeling like I entered the mind of the antagonist from Saw.

>Semi-frequent "adjustments" to charms, boss health, enemy placements, etc are kind of ridiculous and unnecessary for a single player game. People shit on Edmund for nerfing shit in BoI. Why should HK get a pass?
>Dreamers were a massive disappointment
I know they're supposed to be weak because of plot but its still shit
>Boss refights are a little hard to find without knowing about it beforehand
The only way they are shown to you is if you have the dream nail before fighting vessel which is likely, but not guaranteed. I don't think its mentioned ingame at all
>Dark Souls similarities are a bit much all memes aside

True ending is kind of a pain in the ass considering the dreamnail has to be awoken to even see the white palace entrance. Guy should have the dream particles around him and the game should tell you its not strong enough to work on him or something pre-awakening
>>

>>382308343
>This bait
Only genuine thing you have is the very last one but the reasons for the stag placement is lore-friendly but yeah, it's frustrating towards the end. Everything else is literal opinions or buzzwords like "meaningful progression" that means nothing unless you define it and give an example as there's plenty of progressions via abilities, charms, and health/damage/soul boosts. I mean how the fuck is "nothing new for a genre" even a con? Not like the genre HK is in had games coming out the ass like CoD has nor is it a rehash of a previous game.

That's only two. The genre isn't still-born like RTS are but it's nowhere near the level of even fighters. I wouldn't go as far as to call it unpopular, because it's not, but it's relatively untapped. Think it gets 1 game a year on average? At least their quality is pretty good. Could be wrong. Optional in a way that locks you out of one of the endings. As opposed to the Trial of Fools, which is actually just bragging rights.

Plus, setting-wise Trial of Fools works perfectly. It's a big arena of people killing each other and assholes laughing at them, so putting you through a bunch of cheap and difficult traps is very fitting. The White Palace feels like it should have some cool lore/story significance, and we're treated to 20 rooms of floating sawblades. They could have put that challenge somewhere else and made the Palace feel like an actual place.

>>382301652

-I'm often confused by where I end up when I hit spikes/acid. Sometimes it was right next to where I took damage, sometimes it's way back near the area entrance, sometimes it's on a platform I didn't even land on, etc. The only area it felt reliable was the White Palace (thankfully) but anywhere else it was a crapshoot.
-I'm not sure if the input delay/drops are a meme. At first I felt like I must just be imagining it, but then I saw the complaint every HK thread. I find it hard to imagine that, for one game, tons of people have faulty controllers all of the sudden. Not a huge issue, but noticeable.
-I don't like some of the vertical platforming because you don't get a very good view of what's above and below you with the camera. Yes, there's a look up/down, but that's slow and not very fun to use. I remember plenty of areas where you just had to look down, jump down to the only safe platform you can see, look down, jump down to the only one you can see, etc.
-The hunters journal is a pretty bad sidequest. Finding all the enemies is cool, but the "kill X" requirement is unnecessary and tedious, especially when many enemies don't respawn unless you sit at a bench.
-While I like the healing system overall, one flaw with it is that it's very easy to get from point A to point B with no real change in your character's overall status. You could start a level with full health and soul, and get back to the boss with full health and soul, even taking damage many times along the way. Comparing it to something like Estus, let's say you start with 7 estus, take some damage on the way to the boss, and drink 2. Now you only have 5 for the boss, so your failings in the level make you less prepared for the boss. In a lot of areas of Hollow Knight, I get off the bench in the same state as when I arrive at the bossdoor regardless of how much I fucked up, which makes the trek seem less worthwhile, like they might as well have made the checkpoint next to the boss.

Estus healing would make the game more about surviving. The game seems to focus more on overcoming the individual combat encounters. Where healing during a fight is hard, but easy with all the fodder enemies when you aren't in combat
