Basically I go for whichever has more customization or fits my idea more.

I don't enjoy self-inserting into a game, I prefer taking on the "role" of the protagonist, including their personality. If I have the option of creating and customizing my own character, such as in an RPG, then I'll follow my instincts to create a character with motivations that will match the world they are in, and backstory. Male or female is really my least concern on a first play-through.

i play females as well and i roleplay them as well but roleplaying a male character is much more easy

I tend to role play as a semi-self-insert.
I usually make decisions how I normally would but occasionally try and think like my character and do things I normally wouldn't.
This way, male protagonists are usually best, if for no other reason than being able to participate in romance plots if there are any.
