I've seen gamers use the phrase, "gameplay trumps story anytime!", to justify games with poor or non-existant stories. As long as the gameplay is good it gets a pass. Now there are genres or games where gameplay IS all that matters like platformers (3D World was my GOTY 2013), Tetris and sports games.

However working through Ace Attorney series for the first time, Danganronpa 2 and DA Inquisition, story is VERY important to me.

I'll always gravitate towards a game with a great story. My favorite games I see as virtual books or interactive TV series for lack of a better way of putting it It's why I appreciate ambitious developers like Kojima and his MGS series, games that attempt a massive scope with deep lore like the Xenosaga and Mass Effect trilogies, and why I cry myself to sleep at night hoping for a sequel to Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward j/k....sort of :(

This is why I get so frustrated with games that see the story as an after-thought such as recent disappointment Fantasy Life on 3DS. Or going back a bit further, Mario Sticker Star. That one is particularly frustrating as the legendary Miyamoto who's had a hand in some of my favorite games of all time went out of his way to butcher SS and made the dev team strip out the story and keep it so minimal. From what I've read he's not a fan of story in games :(

The more technology advances, the less excuse there is for poor stories in games. I no longer have time or patience for games with good gameplay and bad stories. Great story though, I can excuse some gameplay flaws. Obviously the ideal would be for a game to have great gameplay AND story but that doesn't happen all that often.

What is your take?

It depends on the Genre. Visual Novels and RPGs need some drive to them and they're heavily text-based.
Platformers and racing games, while potentially benefiting from a good story, doesn't necessarily require one, just a framework. Licensed racing games, in particular, are likely non-canon to whatever thing they're referencing and if they are canon, the series probably wasn't sweating about story or lore to begin with.
Basically, it depends on how thematic and connected you want your game to be.

Puzzles games:
>Tetris
>Having plot

OP is right and the trips confirm it

Totally depends on the game and mood I'm in, but for the most part, it's like Romero said back in 90s about DooM:
gameplay > story.

Sure, I love me some quite story-heavy games, like SH, MGS, even Talos Principle, but I'd say all of them have at least passable, somehow memorable gameplay behind them as well. Especially MGS series, usually memed to be "movies", do it brilliantly, totally SEPARATING the cinematics and gameplay into two clear, distinct categories of their own, with each title also having its own kind of gameplay of some sort.
All of the mentioned games also have lots of REPLAY VALUE, which again underlines the necessity of good gameplay.

This is further evident by the recent Zelda: BotW, which totally lures you in with its totally open, TECHNOLOGY filled, dynamic gameplay. Nothing's forced on you, nothing's really stopping you from doing... anything really, and the world is FILLED with tons of interesting things of various sizes and types. It's because of this that you notice yourself having spent countless hours doing something totally silly, when had earlier decided to finally go beat some story-related quests. And I love it, and so seems to do many others around.
What makes BotW even more interesting is the fact that there is indeed a story to follow and unravel. It's not even too bad of a story really, even if it's not mindblowing in the end. It just shows that the plot itself can indeed be a mere base for you to build a fancy world with cool stuff to do, and it can still end up being a memorable, atmospheric and enjoyable ride.

Haha I agree bro. Ignore these "Normies" and their sh*t taste. Only play games for the sorry, always remember!

Not even an OP, but that joke is getting very stale.
I've had way better stories in way more games than I've had with books during my entire life. And it's not even hard to see why: with games, you LIVE the stories, mold and experience them.

I don't know why Todd would support good stories in games when Fallout 3, 4, and Skyrim all have garbage storylines. Hell, FO3's DLC and 4 even retcon some stuff.
>>
>>382277523
If they have garbage story then what the fuck is their a selling point?
>>
>>382277695
The gameplay you dunce. Fallout 4 is a shitty fallout game, but a fun shooter.

true

>>382277695
fallout 4's gameplay wasn't really that bad compared to New vegas, but its story was complete trash.
>>
>>382276000

i think it's important to separate "story" and "storytelling"

which is to say, what makes a "good story" is subjective, while i think what makes good "storytelling" is fairly objective: well-written dialogue, pacing, spare use of tropes

i think a game can have a shitty story told well and be better than a game with a good story (plot) told shittily
>>
>>382277695
You're not trying to tell us that you think Fallout 3/4 and Skyrim's stories are supposed to be their selling points right?

If so, then you're a special kind of stupid. You also misused the Todd meme. Please go.

>I play video games for the story
>I watch porn for the plot
>I read books to look at calligraphy

And so on. Like what you like, but understand how antithetical this is to the medium's strengths.

>My favorite games I see as virtual books or interactive TV series for lack of a better way of putting it

There's some basis for this, actually; the classic cRPGs and VNs do insert the player into the story and allow them to influence events. But I consider that semantics: in cases like these, where plot progression and information presented are determined by player choice, the story IS the game. This I can sympathize with...

> ambitious developers like Kojima and his MGS series
>failed movie directors like Kojima and his MGS series

...but then you lose me again.

Yea, I have to wonder if he even read that aloud before posting.

>The sounds and pictures in this game don't fit my vague idea of "cool" but everyone's giving it a pass because the actual game is good.

Classic cRRPGs would the the gold box D&D games, Wizardry, and Might and Magic.
