When I was younger I had the hardest time trying to beat Blast Pit in Half-Life. The one where you have to turn on the fuel and power to destroy that tentacle thing. I don't know why I had such trouble with it, I just recently played it and it's not that hard. The part I got stuck on the most was after you actually fry the fucker and jump down in the pit, I got stuck down there because I couldn't find where to go next. You had to go into the water and swim down and then up and over. I feel retarded, but it was almost two decades ago.

It's a grid that corresponds to the islands of Riven. You have to put the dots on the spots where there is a certain building, and the color of the dot has to correspond with the island that each building is on.

The solution is spread across two separate islands, each a long, long distance from the puzzle itself. So you have to go to one place to find out what color represents what island, and another giant map to see where you have to put them.

Dude, they literally spoiled that puzzle in one of the first gameplay videos. Annoying too because that turned out not to be "an example of the sort of puzzles you might encounter" but a blatant misrepresentation of the game because there are NEVER any puzzles as, or more "clever" than this one. Like it was cool, but THIS being the epitome of puzzles in an RPG is laughable.

The problem is that there is no reason to ever look at any object in the menu ever. I didn't even know it was possible. It's never introduced as a mechanic, and even if it was, it's only used for one kind of puzzle that appears maybe six times in a huge game.

>do you need a quest marker on your puzzles too?

No. There is just no indication that you can even look at objects and aside from a handful of claw doors, there is absolutely no reason to use it.

The journal is useless. It only very rarely gives you any information that you don't already know. Having to reference something that is almost always useless is not intuitive or rational. It's not the basis for a logical puzzle. That the solution to the puzzle is the one exception to the rule that the journal tells you nothing new is not a logical puzzle.

It's irrational to read the journal. You should quickly realize before you even get to Bleak Falls Barrow that it tells you nothing you don't already know. The only time it is ever useful is the claw thing. That is not a logical puzzle, because the solution is the one exception to the qualities of the journal.

>In RPG's, you read journals 100% of the time. This is RPG 101. You have no excuse.

I don't care about your table-top glory days. As video game technology gets better, more and more of the old table-top features that were in older video games become archaic and vestigial. When you have voice acting that tells you literally everything you need to know 99% of the time, there is absolutely no reason to read the journal. The journal in Skyrim is completely useless unless you just skip all dialogue and read the journal instead to know what is happening, which would be dumb.

The journal, which is a relic that only existed due to technical limitations, serves only one real purpose now. To remind you of story details after you haven't played the game in months and have forgotten what is going on. Otherwise it is vestigial, only there because of tradition or because some people mistakenly believe that it is still relevant.

I'm not trolling. Reading the books in games is good, but quest log information is dumb and vestigial. It's all about presentation of information and how you do it.

If the book has a riddle clue that is referencing a game mechanic that I have no reason to believe exists it's an illogical clue.

You probably just had poor notetaking skills, like most kids. Too much like homework. Myst and Riven are really more of a test of your ability to organize your notes and make sense of patterns. People get frustrated because they think they should be able to just "figure them out" by wandering around and thinking about it.

Never used a guide, but I did have to stop playing Mystic Quest at Falls Basin as a kid. Could not figure out how to use the ice blocks. I though I had to move them out of the way to clear a path. I didn't realize I could walk on top of them and make a bridge out of them as well.

I picked the game back up years later and loaded it up and immediately cleared the dungeon. Felt like an idiot.

Because of that area, I replayed the first part of the game up to that point like 20 times as a child.
>>
>>382285953
Crafting a good puzzle is a lot like coming up with a good joke. You need a setup the player can easily follow along, but then a clever subversion of expectations at the end. "Oh, I didn't think it was going to go THAT way, but I can see now why it did."

A simpler rule of thumb is just to make sure the puzzles are integrated into the environment. A self-contained minigame with no connection to the world is a lame puzzle; the player should have to look around and learn something or use the environment somehow.

Same issue I had with OP's puzzle. I think the only time you ever use that feature is for those puzzles and that's it and since it's early on and no one told you it was a feature you usually don't have the time to accidentally find out about it, at least I didn't.

I had to look this shit up. It's a simple puzzle, but it's bad game design.
>the game bombards you with items from the start, you pick up dozens of things before that point

>up until that point, the game gives you NO reason to try to look at/rotate anything in your inventory, nor does it give hints that you can do it. No previous Elder Scrolls game requires you to do this either

>the hallway you find the door in has multiple frescoes (unlike rest of the dungeon), inviting you to explore them and a lot of people assumed that's where the solution will be

>in fact some of the puzzles you encounter early on require you to observe your environment

This is just a really badly designed puzzle. Bethesda quality strikes again
