Except there isn't anything wrong with the mechanic in Botw. There are other more glaring flaws in the game but that wasn't one of them.
Weapons breaking gives you incentive to switch weapons and fight new monsters so you can pick up their weapons, adding this sense of progression.
And if the weapons didn't break there would be zero thought put into what weapon to use in a scenario as you'd always use your strongest
