I love SotN but how the hell do you find it more replayable than AoS when only one has you go through the entire game a second time but upside down.
SotN also lacks any serious challenge which can make it feel mundane and like you're just going through the ropes any repeat playthroughs when you have the progression figured out.

The Remake CAN be beaten without a guide, but certain puzzles, like the mantra puzzle, are gonna be pretty rough to try and parse out given what the game gives you.
It's pretty much impossible to beat the 2005 version without a guide.

It's fun. You should be able to get through a good chunk of the game without a guide depending on how patient you are. I think around the halfway point the map opens up so much that you have so much to work with that it isn't worth the effort any more and you're right, its not fun when you're reading a guide so thats when I dropped it

Mantras can easily be brute forced as long as you understand frontside and backside.

Beating the La-Mulana Remake without using a guide isn't that difficult. I played it for the first time last year and I honestly think the difficulty of the game has been overblown. It's tough and cryptic but not impossible. You just need to pay attention, devote a lot of time to it, and not give up when you get stuck for a while.

The only thing that is legitimately impossible to understand without a guide is Hell Temple.
