I don't like games that literally require a guide to be beaten.
>>
>>382239618
If people just like the cryptic nature of it, I'd rather try to get into Myst and save myself a lot of frustrating walking around discerning where the fuck clues are even applicable.
>>
>>382239782
>>382239857
Myst is way harder, though. It's just the fact that most people who play metroidvanias and 2D action/platformers never have to put the amount of effort into actually thinking and solving puzzles.

Face it, it's basically Legend of Zelda x Castlevania if Zelda didn't have the easiest puzzles in the world so nobody would complain

It may be a nice puzzle game but calling it the best metroidvania (or even a high-tier puzzle game) is laughable.
>awful, unbalanced, simplistic combat (being a bit harder than majority of metroidvanias doesn't make it good)
>awful variety of upgrades, aside from feather nothing adds new ways of traversing environment, vast majority of secondary weapons are complete garbage, weapon balance is laughably bad
>overall it misses one of the most important parts of what makes metroidvania good - wonder of discovery and character progress
>thinks that it's good enough to pointlessly waste your time even with the most basic things like character speed as he moves like a fat sack with shit even with Hermes Boots
>forces you to refer to a fucking game manual instead of integrating it into the actual game with a possibility to turn it off or on
The only thing this game has going for it is a sheer size and complexity of maps but it doesn't mean much when majority of actual game mechanics make you want to fall asleep.
>>
It's alright. I was so hyped on beating it recently at the time that I backed the sequel, but looking back on it it wasn't a super enjoyable experience. At one point I just stopped caring and used a guide, it felt like they expected me to read their minds at some parts. Maybe if the sequel is a little less cryptic.
>>
>>382240573
>aside from feather nothing adds new ways of traversing environment
That's wrong though.
>>
>>382240573
>awful, unbalanced, simplistic combat (being a bit harder than majority of metroidvanias doesn't make it good)
It's no more complex than SotN or Super Metroid.

>wonder of discovery
But finding new things and areas in La-mulana was always satisfying because new areas had god-tier atmosphere and music while you usually had to solve tough puzzles to get new items and get to them.
>thinks that it's good enough to pointlessly waste your time even with the most basic things like character speed as he moves like a fat sack with shit even with Hermes Boots
But you go really fast with the hermes boots and the pacing of the character prior to the hermes boots is leisurely and relaxing.
>forces you to refer to a fucking game manual instead of integrating it into the actual game with a possibility to turn it off or on
You didn't have to read the manual and even then how is this a bad thing? Games did this all the time in the past.
>>
>>382240289
Hopefully soon. The lastest update details how Naramura forgets to add the minor, final touches, mostly of them being some death traps.

/v/, the stupidest shithole on all of 4chan, which itself is the shithole of the internet, just arbitrarily claims to have developed taste, but for some reason that 'taste' only includes about 3 really horrible fucking games repeated endlessly, deus ex, mulana, planescape, etc

do you know that there were hundreds of really great games made before you were born, and thats true regardless of when you were born

you guys need to branch out just a little bit
>>
>>382241062
No, that's not wrong. It's the only actually prominent character upgrade that truly changes the way your character traverses the areas instead of just serving for some puzzle-related gimmick.
Compare this to super jump, wolf/bat/mist forms from SotN alone.

>It's no more complex than SotN or Super Metroid.
Of course. It's less. It doesn't even have a dodge action, spells or forms of SotN. And i'm not talking about later metroidvanias, i mean remake of shit went out 4 years later than OoE while original is still younger than GBA castlevanias.
>>
>>382241393
Still, the grapple claws could be used for more than just some puzzles. Just because you never did doesn't mean they weren't useful in certain situations.

But I already have.
>>
>>382241616
But I personally love the art, love the music, love the adventure-esque presentation, love the variety in levels that provide a variety of different kinds of atmosphere (adventure/horror/funny/mysterious/etc), was immersed in the adventure due to how weighted the combat and movement felt, and didn't use a walkthrough.

>>
>>382240573
>vast majority of secondary weapons are complete garbage
Spears are pretty shit and the rolling shurikens are just extra ammo but every other sub weapon ranges from situationally amazing to useful.
All of the main weapons are great, with the axe being generally the best.
>>
>>382240289
>Circle of the moon that high
>Harmony of Dissonance that low
>Dawn not on the same level as Portrait
>>
>>382241958

/v/ talks about three games.
You talk about none.
You are worse than /v/.
>>
>>382243154
>every other sub weapon ranges from situationally amazing to useful
The only usable sub weapons are chackrams, shield, caltrops and revolver, and last two completely break the fucking game into oblivion with either i-frame abuse or fairy money grind.
As far as metroidvanias go, LM has some of the worst sub-weapons i've seen in the entire genre.
All of the main weapons are great
Oh yes, remember how much you enjoyed using that katana or dagger...
>>
>>382239618
not my kind of game, I wouldn't feel like playing it on my desktop, but I wouldn't mind to try it on a portable, I'd play it on my switch.
>>
>>382243515
i did, katana is pretty useful for palenque and dagger to quickly dispatch of lesser enemies is great.

>>382243649
But it's on the vita
>playing on a vita
well fuck you too
>>
>>382243515
>>382243515
Katana is extremely useful for "Don't use subweapons on bosses" achievement, because it attacks below you which is required for some bosses (like palenque)

Dagger is extremely useful for speedruns and getting quick damage in

The only useless main weapon is the key sword

>>382243649
The game would definitely not work on portable, though there is a Vita version which is supposedly the best version.
>>
>>382239618
I have played it. It's hard. I can't beat it.
Maybe I'll go back to it some time soon, since I backed part 2 on KS.
>>
>>382243515
>not using shurikens
>not hitting flying niggers with flares
And the knife is actually the best weapon in the game for breaking objects.

>>
>>382243748
I platinum'ed EX, and it's pretty good. The only real differences is, of course, the monster compendium, which has some pretty cool art for everything, and some differences in the first area to make it "easier" (remember that chest where you have to fall through a place that opens up but you have to jump in time to control the fall? That wall is just busted open so you can jump trhough it, that's the only difference i know of)
>>
>>382239782

>>
>>382243963
I'm talking specifically about combat because i couldn't care less about shitty puzzles this game forced on me.
Hitting flying enemy for 1 damage with a flare that costs money to refill is such a laughable concept i can't wrap my head around it, especially after playing in a shitload of games from this genre.

Why even bother? Part of the point of Metroidvania is to have a coherent sense of progression from rational exploration that hinges on the game having well-structured level design and layout, the roguelike design principle of randomly generated dungeons all but completely undermines that shit.
